Silver Sabre umax

I have a Silver Sabre umax that I've had for a lot of yrs. Recently I noticed that the threshold was not making any sound. It still seems to detect coins as deep as it ever did. So I guess my question is, what is the purpose of the threshold?

Threshold only matters when pinpointing. You should hold the coil away from the ground / metal objects, press and hold the pinpoint, and then adjust the threshold until it starting to become difficult to hear.

Actually thresholld is a level that items should be louder than t be heard if you have the threshold set too low/ You might never hear weak or deep targets and if the threshold is set too high you might blow your ears of passing over a very loud and large target.

I have several SSumax and somewhere in the manual it mentions a light threshold tone (set when the pinpoint button is pressed away from any target) does have an effect on the performance in discrimination mode.

The manual is right here.

I read the bulk of it before I posted and did not encounter any connection between threshold and discrimination mode. That said, I realize that there can be a lot of difference between the way things actually work and the manual.

Since my threshold doesn't produce a sound, is it hurting the performance of the detector? Like I mentioned before, it seems to detect coins at same depth as it always did.

If I were you, I think that I would call Tesoro and explain the situation and voice your concerns. This might be a symptom of a larger problem.

Clint,

...Just a question, if you don't mind, did you accidentally bump the knob and turn down the threshold? I would try that, push pinpoint button and turn threshold knob clockwise until threshold comes in. I have bumped my knobs out of position lots of times, just make a mental note where pointers are positioned. I take a little piece of colored tape and mark the face plate at the position of the pointer on the knob where the threshold is just audible.

It hadn't moved any but I did hold the pinpoint button in and adjust it. It would control the pinpoint volume just fine. I thought there was always a hum on it before but guess I was wrong. Its been awhile since I've used it.

Clint,

....That's great that we figured out the threshold on your Silver Sabre

The Threshold is only audible in all metal. When the pinpoint is depressed, the detector is in all metal. Years ago I ran into the reference I mentioned earlier that the threhold needs to be audible for optimum performance in discrimination. Probably worth playing with a bit to see if it makes a significant difference.
