Silver uMax opinions.

Hey all, I was just curious what you folks think about the Silver uMax. If Tesoro decides not to fix my Cortes, my brother is going to give me my $400 back and I am looking at other Tesoro's. I strictly hunt for coins, tokens, jewelry. Never any beach hunting at all. Is the Silver a good detector for silver coins up to around 6-7 inches? We have mild to moderate mineralization here so detectors without adjustable ground balance work fairly well. I'm just worried the Silver might be better suited for tot lots and shallow clad rather than a capable old coin machine. Anyone ever find any deep coins with the SIlver, would you feel confident using it as your main coinshooter? Thanks.
 
The Silver uMax is a fine machine as is any Tesoro and getting the depths you mentioned i see no problem at all.

Found a bunch of silver jewelry with at at several school yards as well.

I don't recall the deepest depth of a coin I found, more than enough for most hunt sites.

That's awesome Tabman, but I don't actively hunt for new coinage. Have you found many silver coins?
 
I think any silver coin you pass the coil over within 5-6 inches deep you will bring home with you. I love my silverumax and it has paid for itself a few times over. I found this stuff with mine this past November.

I had a Deleon for about 6 months, found my deepest silver with it. I had more fun with my silverumax so I went back to it and when I am in the right spot I still get lucky with it.
 
Yep-goon'un. I know a friend who used his and mainly listened to the soft,smooth sounds in likely areas and found some deep silver. Another technique is to hunt in a/m mode and then check by flipping the switch to min. discriminate. Since the Silver is a fixed g/b and a 2-filter machine, a little slower sweep speed can add a full inch of depth.
 
Would it be similar in performance to the Cortes depthwise anyway? I can do without the screen...good finds would probably increase actually.
 
MichiganJason, I own a Silver and was only able to get about 8 hours on it last season before the ground froze. I found modern clad at 6" no problem at all. I live in northern Wisconsin and have soil very mild and similar to yours. This sweet little, light, inexpensive detector is a dream machine. I feel it will get more depth hunting in all metal mode. Locate a target in all metal and then switch to disc. mode to check your target out. I feel this detector will meet most peoples needs. If it is more depth you must have, then for a few bucks more get a Cibola. I however don't feel you will be disappointed at all with the Silver uMax. Call Treasure Mountian or Miller MDZ and ask for their price. You can get a really good deal. I bought my Silver uMax on that big auction site on a make an offer bid. I made a ridiculous offer of $160 and the next thing you know it said I had won and payment must be made. I thought no way will they accept. So, I ended up paying and got the detector. It was used very little if ever used. Sitll had the factory Panasonic batteries in it that tested at 7 beeps on batt. check. Not a scratch on the coil or anywhere! Until i accidentally bought this I hadn't used a detector for 9 years plus and it was a Garrett GTAX 450 that I loved and swore by. This little Silver uMax would run circles around that great detector. Listen to Tabman, he knows.
 
I've got a Silver, a Golden, and a Deleon.

You have to keep in mind that the Silver umax comes with an 8" coil stock. I think it is one of Tesoro's best coils, and I'd feel pretty comfortable with finding the good stuff at 6" though I think that dimes will be unlikely at 7" in discrimination mode.

To keep that kind of depth, you will have to run with your discrimination just above iron. As you turn up the discrimination, depth disappears. You should do some air tests so you get a good mental picture of what you are losing when you discriminate. One of the reasons that I love the Golden and Deleon is that you can run wide open and use VDI / tones to get the good stuff.

But I think that they'll take care of your Cortes.

It seems that my detectors don't find , or hit at the distances, others claim for their units. A quick air test, silver dime, a bit over 5 inches. On all metal, the electrical noise was a bummer in my house. I would not be surprised if the dime was at seven inches.. I went from a 1266 xb fisher to a Silver some years back, and with that unit found coins in the five plus inch range.. The silver is a great machine, this is my second.. When I got a Vaquero, I went back to an old house that gave some nice coins.. Silver got them all....
 
It seems that many have detectors that hit a little deeper than ours. I'm thinking their cars get better mileage and the fish they catch are bigger as well LOL. While many put down air tests, I use them as a comparison point between units and also to double check suspected changes in performance. Electrical interference can definitely skew the results in my experience.

I dont take too much stock in airtests. The deepest machine I ever had was a Whites Eagle spectrum cranked up if you go by airtests. It would hit a quarter at 15 inches. Never see that performance in the ground though. As long as I can get 6ish on a silver dime in ground I'm happy.
 
I agree that air test are not substitute for in ground results. However, as I mentioned, for other comparisons or to see in performance has changed noticably, they have their use IMHO.

Hi Ive been detecting for like 14 years. My silver umax has found me a couple hundred coins from the 1800's. I have tried other detectors and found myself going back to the silver because its an awesome detector. As far as depth it depends on soil conditions if you have wet soil signals go much deeper and dry soil not as deep but I highly reccomend it and have found so much with it id never trade it for anything. Dan

A silver was my very first machine that got me into this addiction. I wish I would have never got rid of it...and if you yahoos don't quit reminding me how much I miss it...I'm prolly gonna have to order another....so stop already would ya?!:rant::tesoro::detecting:

I used mine till the decals were kinda rough and then I modified it with a "tab check" switch"(which I don't hardly use anymore) so no one would buy mine because the warranty is voided. So I didn't have to worry about mine going anywhere.:rofl: So I got the pleasure of going out with mine this a.m. I do like the way it kinda "trash talks".
