Just ordered a new Tesoro Silver UMax and should have it next week. I've never had a Tesoro before and a detector without a target ID. I live in Indiana and was wanting to know any tips anyone wanted to share about this detector. I'm on vacation during the second week of October and would really like to see what it can do . Any tips or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Start by getting a bunch of different items (coins, rings pull taps foil and etc), find a place where there is no trash, spread a cloth down and place all the different items about one foot apart. Practice listening to the detector sounds at different depths on the items. When you start hunting in the ground the sounds will change some, but you will have a idea what you are listening for. Deeper objects tend to sound not as good in the ground as in the air. This will give you a jump on learning your new detector. A non TID detector (especially a Tesoro) has a faster response time than a TID model.(recovery between targets) and this helps it look between the trash. A trick to look between trash is to hold that 8 inch coil about 3 to 4 inches above the ground when hunting. That in effect makes the 8 inch coil act like a smaller one, but maybe a little less depth. Bill In Texas 
I would hunt at foil disc-on mine just set the knob pointer where it's above "iron" and dig everything. The "trashy" signals will have more of the chopped signal for you to learn easier. The "good" signals-and this includes pulltabs will have either a longer, smoother sound. The probable trash signals will sound as if the front and back of the signal have been chopped off or only give a strong sound one way. Then, after you get used to the different sounds, you may want to lower it all the way to zero-which is still rejecting nails,small iron but gives you the chance to find small gold items. It's hard to do this sometimes, as the small pieces of foil and other "pesky" trash are pretty well eliminated at just below nickel and you can still get 75% of the rings.
