SImple tone question or two about the Safari

Hi Guys-

someone mentioned to me that the newer e-trac has more or a beep than a meeeeeooowwwww like the explorer has when sounding off over metal. Would this also be the case with the Safari too (please say yes!)

Also, I DID skim through the owners manual, and didnt see if there was an option to change tones to either single tone or tones to match each VDI. I also saw where relic tones differ from coin tones......... So, if there ISNT a tone option, I am guessing I could modify a stock pgm that has the tone setup I like best, correct?

I guess I could wait till approx Wednesday to find out in person, however I know all your Safari pro's know the answer and will allow me to hit the field swinging.

Thanks!

Tony

Tony I was waiting for someone else to answer your question but no one so far. I have never used an Explorer or Etrac.
You can not change the tones. You have a multiple tones and that is it. You can not change the pitch of the tones. You can run in Ferrous audio or Conductivity audio. But you can compare the two with a push of a button. I am the last one to give you tech information. It is an easy machine to set up and run with but it sure does take some time to get to know. Many of us are trying like crazy to get to know the thing. Just two days ago I talked to a dealer about trading mine in on another machine. Went out yesterday and digging deep targets all over the beach and realized that this is the best beach machine I have ever used. So I am back in love with it until I get another sore arm.

Thanks Zeekeys, for the answer, I thought I had the cooteys or something due to lack of a reply.

I have a Safari on its way to me as we type and I certainly will find out within a few short minutes if the tones are different than the Explorer. I have a hunch they will be the same.

The Explorers I have had were fine inland, great on the salt beaches. I had always hoped for an Explorer like unit with the beep tones of perhaps an X70 or similar. This is what I heard the E-trac kinda sorta sounds like. Another fella mentioned that the e-trac and safari use the same processor and perhaps the tones may be similar, I couldnt find anything regarding this, so I took the chance on the safari anyways, The tones are fine as they are, yet to me, could be finer if they were more snappy.

I agree, the multi freq M/Ls are awesome on the wet salt beaches. A belt mounted Sovereign, any one of the sovereigns does a great job cleaning up at the beach as well.

Tony I think you will find the people that keep the Safari are new to M/L detectors. I noticed the ones that given them up already have been M/L users and it is too close to their Explores so no reason to keep them. Just guessing on this? If you read TomH's post under my post of Good Fairies you will see why I decided on the Safari. His reasons are similar to mine for getting the Safari. I kind of got tired of swinging a light detector on the beach and only picking up surface coins. Don't much care for the weight of the Safari, but will work with it because it does go deep and it is easy to set up and run with but much learning.

Tony,

Look down the page and open the Safari Sounds Video post. There is a link to a vid that will give you a good idea of what the machine sounds like, on European coins anyway. Still a good overall example of the tones in ferrous and conductive audio.

I've had mine for a few months now and after getting over the frustration and confusion of learning a new machine I am glad I didn't give up on it because it's a great machine when you learn it. I can tell with great accuracy before digging a target whether or not it's junk. This has resulted in a lot less digging and a lot more quality finds. It's refreshing to be able to distinguish between nickels and pulltabs. I had a Cibola Tesoro, and I still think it's a great starter detector, but the Safari is fantastic. I'd love to know what a gold coin rings out at.

Safari should be here tomorrow and will hear it in person. I was hoping it might be more e-trac-like in the sound department, but have since learned it is very Explorer like, which isnt a problem.

Thanks for all the replies.

Tony don't forget to noise cancel. I noise cancel with change of sand. I noise cancel after about 45 minutes or have moved some distance from last cancel and when it gets noisy. I don't know if you have to cancel that much but it is so easy and I like it at max as much as possible.....Z

Great Tony with the same tones as the explorer you will be one step ahead of us guys that have never had a M/L before because some of us have had a time to adjust to the different tones. Good luck with the Safari.....Z
