Slim Pickens, But Worth The Effort!

James N.D.

New member
I didn't get out on Friday but ventured out on Saturday and for a few hours on Sunday. Saturday was a miserable day out with the temp around 40 degrees and a wind of 30-40 mph. It was a cold one for sure but Sunday was close to 50 degrees and little wind but I didn't get out until after 10:00am thinking that it was going to be another day like the one before. Boy, was I wrong and I kicked myself for not getting up and heading out early in the morning. The few finds I did get were well worth the effort though since I did get 2 items I needed for this upcoming Find Of The Month Meeting on Friday Nov. 18th. They were a Foreign Coin and a nice Relic. Well, here goes nothin'. I found 5 Silver which included 2 Barber Dimes dated 1911 and 1913, 1 Mercury Dime dated 1942, 1 Roosevelt Dime dated 1960-d, and a Silver Foreign Coin from Sweden, a 50 ORE dated 1899. It has 2 holes in it. I will picture the Foreign Coin separately with pics of the front and the back. I also found a Good For Token. It is a Good For 5c In Trade / E. J. Iverson Fullerton, N.D. Aluminum Token. I also found an Aluminum Play Coin that says One Henny Penny on one side and on the other it says Chicken Feed Play Coin. I will picture this with the Token. I also found 1 Buffalo Nickel dated 1913 and is a Variety 1. It is in decent shape but too bad it didn't have a Mint-mark and was a Variety 2 since those are worth a few bucks. Maybe next time! I also found 7 Wheat's dated 1925-d,1935-d,1937,1942-d,1946-d,1947-d,1949-d. The Nickel and the Wheat's are pictured together. My Relic is an C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps.) Watch Fob dated 1935. I found it in a Park along the Gravel Road at about 6"-8" deep. I also found a Nestor Falls Fly-In Leatherman laying on top of the ground at a Balldiamond I was at. An added bonus I guess. Well, that does it for this last weekend so I hope that everyone that is able to get out finds some nice stuff during the week and like always, Good Luck and HH.[attachment 40551 WatchFobandLeatherman.jpg]

Good finds James...Hope you were wearing your blaze orange while you were out doing it! I chased deer all weekend...not sure if the ground will hold on for digging much longer. I would like to get out before the meeting on Friday myself.

Real Good Stuff James...My Grandpa on Mom's side was Iverson...Grandma was Severson...around Alexander...Where you at??? May be why you guys have so much good loot up there...Ground freezes for half the year...

I travel around a bit when I do go out detecting. It is fun to just get out and drive to different towns and to see if they have any good spots to detect in hopes of finding some nice older finds. Where are you located TomTowns? It kind of sounded like that you are from North Dakota or close by yourself. Thanks for the reply and Good Luck and HH.

I didn't do any detecting around tree belts this weekend but I did try a Church or 2 but that was on Saturday and when you are out in open area, you just don't tend to stay very long. I do know there is stuff in both Church Yards since I did get a Wheatie from the 2 I did stop at. 40mph winds made me retreat back to the vehicle pretty fast so I will have to check those spots out some other time. As far as the ground is concerned, I think it will be diggable another week or so. So I think you should be able to get out on Friday before the meeting to try and find a few last minute finds. Good Luck and HH.

I'm in Sacto. Ca. Mom was from N. Dakota...Around Alexander, I don't know where all my relatives are back there but I had them scattered from around Williston & Alex. No first cousins but I'm sure plenty of second...I'll check with my one aunt that's still alive & I think my sister is in touch with some of them...Last time I was in the area was 2000....Just drove through...(Big Rig)Hey those Speed Bumps on the interstate...Is that caused by the ground freezing??? HH...TT

It's called Frost Heaves. The Frost in the ground moves around in the winter and especially when Spring arrives due to the ground thawing. You would be amazed if you could see what it does to the coins in the ground. Sometimes it will move them around and produce a different angle so that next time a person goes over the object, it will sound good. I work Construction and I have seen poured Concrete Slabs buckle Steel Siding if the Concrete was poured too close to the bottom of the Siding. At least you are at a warmer climate and I bet you can hunt all year round where you live. Good hearing back from you and Good Luck and HH.

Just about froze my butt off on Saturday though. I returned to a Park I found last fall and I found the Watch Fob, Barber Dime, Mercury Dime and Roosevelt Dime there. That was the first time I ever found more Silver than Wheaties. And the Barber was a Shocker since the Gate Entrance says 1936 on it so I thought it wouldn't yeild Barber. Guess I was wrong. You should be out doing a little detecting before the big freeze comes or are you too busy at the Casino. If you are I hope you are winning more than losing and I wish you Luck the next time you go to one of them Casino's. Win Big for me will ya! Good Luck and HH to you Denny if you and your wife are able to get out one more time this year.

I just hope you have better luck than I did when you get out and hit one of your spots. Good Luck and HH.

Yeah, we were out in the nasty weather Saturday. Here it was not too cold but raining most of the time. I hate digging in mucky stuff.

You scored some nice ones. Couple barbers and a nice '13 Buff. I have found about 9 Buffalo's the last few weeks and of the nine 4 had dates and only one was a strong date.

Bob

It sure is nice to find the old Buffalo Nickels with a readable date without the use of Nic-A-Date Date Restorer. I hope to get out at least one more time this year and after that I will be very pleased with my finds that I have made this year. Continued success at that spot of yours and Good Luck and HH.

James,I'm not aware of what you guys know as your KEY coins, such as the barber...
Barbers cut our hair down-under.
But I really participate in the excitement of anybody who posts a great find on the forum...

This is a Barber Half I found last year at a well hunted Park along the sidewalk. These type of coins just make my mouth water especially when they are in this condition. I hope you have a few nice older coins that are highly collectible where you are located that you yourself are looking to find. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:[attachment 40755 BarberHalfFront.jpg][attachment 40746 BarberHalfBack.jpg]
