Today I headed to a "hunted-to-death" park. I know it's a tough place because I've hunted it ad nauseum over the past two years. Two days ago I dug a Barber dime and a Buffalo nickel from a particular area but couldn't get anything else with my 10x12 sef butterfly coil. So today I headed back there with my 8x6 sef butterfly coil with the hope of pulling another good find from the ground.
I also hunted with a new discrimination pattern. It's Andy Sabisch's coin hunting pattern. Here's what it looks like:
It worked very well but I still managed to find an old, rusty, square nail.
But that's ok because it's impossible and unrealistic to expect to never dig trash. It's part of the game. You've got to dig some trash. So I wasn't too worried about finding the rusty nail. Every once in a while I'd dig one with the old discrimination pattern...which was the stock pattern in the Coin Mode with silver dollars and halves latched in.
I also dug some pulltabs and other junk just to remove them from the area I was hunting. Without a doubt, old coins are still in the ground being masked by garbage. The more I remove; the higher my odds of pulling more oldies from there.
Soon I found what I was looking for. I got a nice, high tone. The numbers looked good too. I cut the plug and pulled it back. Peeking from the dirt was a coin. I couldn't tell whether it was silver or not.
So I plucked it from the hole and took a closer look. It was a dark Barber dime encrusted with dirt. I poured some water on it and patted the soil off and, yup, it was a 1906 Barber dime!
It was only 3 or 4 inches deep.
I hunted this same spot the other day with my big coil. I know I went over this same exact spot several times and didn't get that dime. I may have gotten a signal...but if I did, it wasn't one I'd dig. On the flip side, I may not have gotten a signal at all. Whichever the case may have been, it's obvious that the small coil gave me a dig me signal.
Here's the Barber cleaned up:
Then it started raining and, man-o-man, did it pour! We really needed the rain because our soil has been bone dry and, in some spots, rock hard.
Here are my finds before the rain shut me down:
Here's the Barber before cleaning.
I may tweak the discrimination pattern after I've hunted some more with it. So far I'm liking it.
Here's some video from the hunt:
