:smoke:Snowy's Explorer story...

SNOWY

New member
Before the Explorer II came out I started with an XS for a few months,( just before the II was released.)
Then the II came out and I thought that having Ferr. and Cond. numbers, and faster electronics would be the answer to my prayers...

But I ended up not all together happy with my results, because I was bringing home too much detected stuff from the old homestead that I have been detecting {that read like goodies.}
Lots of things share the same "finger prints" out there.

I started to believe that I didn't need all that info that I was being given on the Explorer TID, and I made up my mind that such an amount of info was "overkill"
~ and so I stepped out of the Explorer II and I got a Garrett GTI 2500, and was going along quite happily...

A chance to buy a SH Tesoro Corte's came my way, ( I was really interested in one of these sometime back,)
I was really happy with this Corte's for a couple of years;( I still like it,) and used my GTI2500 as a backup.

Next thing, a guy comes into the shop really confused, and disillusioned with his Explorer II;
and he wanted to change detectors,I had a GTI2500 that was gathering dust, so offered to do a direct trade, ~ he jumped at it...

Getting back into the familiar Explorer again was like a lot of things that we do "the second time around" ~ I really enjoyed operating it,and am now really happy with it...
Recently when the SE was released I grabbed it with both hands ~ and I think it's just great.

I still have my Explorer II, and Corte's plus extra coils for both...

For my Explorer I have (apart from the standard coil,) a Sunray X-5,Sunray X-12 for the beach and a Sunray X-1 pinpointer that I regularly forget to switch back to coil after pinpointing!

And I'm keepin' them heh heh.

There ya go...

Hi Snowy,

Looks like you should be a wealth of information on various detectors.
Unfortunately or fortunately which ever way you look at it, I have only owned explorers, and I'm pretty happy with them.
As for not switching the X1 probe back to the main coil, your not the only one mate, and I guess we won't be the last.

Happy hunting ....Boony

Put a piece of iron in your pocket, something that gives off an undesirable signal, that way you wont go five feet and you'll say that's not in the ground that's the crap in my pocket. Right handed right pocket / left handed left pocket. The worst is when you have change in your pocket....avoid that. The trick is to use the same item each time because every time you here that signal you'll look down immediately at your switch. On my SE Ralph put my x1 on the side of me arm rest, so it picks up my pocket if it's left on, that also helps like a counter balance for the coil, likes to tangle with my head phones cord though. I found my first Indian head last week 1892 and I'm up to about 20 silver (all dimes) No seated though, However I found a tree with no less than five silver British three pence's in one hole dating from 1938-1850 in fricking Iowa, don't ask me how, you got me. Oh and about 100 Wheaties, a couple 1909's no marks though, next time good luck to you.

You're right Boony,I'm not the first and won't be the last.
I'm very happy with the probe and don't see the switch issue as a fault.
It's happening less and less,so ~ no problem...

Hey Digitrich thanks for that idea, and wow,
5 old silver British threepences under a tree in Iowa!

Ya just NEVER know what's coming up next do ya...

So that it automatically pops back after use? Or have sort of like a times switch that switch off after a set amount of time like 30 sec's?

You're a clever one Tony...

We only use the probe momentarily.
And once we work out where we are going to dig,
we release the switch, putting us back in coil mode ~ automatically!!!

Brilliant!

I've been swinging a coil since the early 70's and it's been an adventure all the way. All of the wonderful new technology from single beepers through full blown computerized detectors can make picking the RIGHT ONE a challenge!
Like anyone else I have my favorite detectors but I've made a habit not to become meter/screen dependent and will often reach for a Tesoro, Musky, or Sovereign without a meter to get back into the habit of digging more targets ... the iffy ones that sound good one way and bad the other, the ones that are just barely inside the limit of detection ect.
It always PAYS OFF in the long run, yeah I might dig some extra trash but I'll dig some goodies that I normally wouldn't have dug too.

We both know that no one machine will get it all and some units might be better at say pulling brass from a site than another.
There are a few places I hunt (plowed fields) where the Explorer won't do well at all because the ground is constantly being disturbed. But ... I can use it around the outside borders and it's great ... I use the single beepers in the field.
Anyway, my point is that just about the time I THINK a site is hunted out, I hit it with a different detector and I find goodies the others missed.
I'll give the Explorer it's due  because when truly learned and used in the right place, there will NOT be much left behind.

NUP ERIKK.....

I'm so glad I'm not alone!!!

I would feel that that spring return switch idea would be a great option on the fantastic X-1,any body got thoughts on this???

I'm happy banana now ~ [attachment 40911 Cheekybanana.gif]
