How many of you keep some sort of log of your detecting outings? Some keep it on their computer, some a small notebook, etc.... Some don't at all.
I would recommend that you start if you don't. I do a simple one in a small notebook. I write the date, where I went, and I list all my keepers.
Next I have a notebook where I keep track of my keepers. I have a column for wheats, IH, silver, tokens, other old coins, rings, other jewelry, etc....
It is fun to look back and see when you break a record, or maybe you find a first. Ok how do you keep track?
 
I used to use a couple real nice logging programs on the computer....then the computer crashed...no once but several times.

I recommend a log book - one of those multi-section spiral wound notebooks work great. One section to keep track of day, date, time, location, finds, etc. Another section to make maps of your detected area....say a park, show a drawing of the park and where you were or have detected...use it for reference on what was found and where and so you know where you have and have not detected there.
Another section could be to keep track of GPS coordinates of 'future' possible sites. Maybe another section to keep track of your equipment, serial numbers, purchase date/price, etc. in case something is stolen..you have the info to pass on to detecting forums and your insurance company. Use your imagination how you want to set things up.
 
A friend told me I keep too much info so I'm trying to back off. But its hard when you have OCD.
Then again I do keep track of just a few records. Coins per outing, coins per minute, # of steps between coins, wheats to silver, silver to wheats. pennies per day. quarters per week, nickels per month

I started using the old file card in box. Got each year's take on a card dating back to 1980. Also have a thick notebook for all sites in my area, when I go there, how long it's been, etc. I have about 250 sites now. Steve in so az

I didn't keep track of my last few years of detecting places and finds like I once did, but I kept track of where, when, how many and every coin I found including misc for years and years....BUT....having packed away a lot of my STUFF for moving when I thought Cliff and I would move into the Cuba, MO, house, I don't know where most things are without searching through boxes and etc. As soon as I close on the selling of it in May, I will have to start unpacking a few boxes to find some of the items I need for my Computer and etc. Won't unpack all of the boxes, because I intend to have a garage sale &/or an auction when I am able to do so, but of course that may not ever be with me but probably my children if I should pass away one of these days or Gabriel blows God's trumpet for Jesus to come and catch His own away! One of these days when I am caught up with a few things, hopefully, I will search until I find my log-books and get a blessing in discovering again what I've found in the past! No pics were taken back in the 80's or 90's just words to remember by! :) I kept notes but don't think I wrote them all down in the books I kept, soooo some of my finds will not be disclosed....only by going through the coins and misc.

Ma kept too busy with work, house and yard work, and going :detecting: to keep track of everything! Too tiring for body and mind! :shrug: :biggrin: May God Bless! Amen! :angel: Ma Betty
 
Actually I don't keep track of my finds (on paper that is). Finding things is exciting but that's not the greatest gift, for me, in metal detecting. As an ex-cancer patient, now in remission for nearly ten years, my greatest find is being in God's great out-of-doors praising him for the ability to be active and enjoy 'our time together'. During the chemo years (well it seemed like years) I didn't have the energy or maybe even the desire to be outside. All I wanted to do was sleep to get away from the pain and sickness. Praise God He chose to bring me into remission and get me outdoors. My past in metal detecting began in the laste 70's with an old White's machine that left much to be desired. Oh I found things alright but only if they weren't more than an inch or so in the soil. None the less it was exciting to find things. I'm happy to be back at it again and enjoying the time God has given me and deligted to have found some neat things along the way. One of the 'Finds' that is precious to me is finding this forum and all of you. Though we haven't met in person, I feel like I've know each of you all my life and, for that, I am most grateful. Maybe I'll carry a small pocket size tally to write all
my finds down? Maybe that would be a good thing?
 
When you go through the boxes, it will be like finding treasure all over again!

Well, I am NOT an organized person - at all. I don't keep records of my outings or finds, I just throw them into boxes and can remember where I was when I found almost every single item, other than some of the coins.

I have an AWESOME find from yesterday that I will be sharing soon!

I keep all my stuff in mason jars. I started a new one for this year. I remember where I found all my good stuff.
 
I would need 50 one gallon jars! :thumbup:
