I'll take that Condor Parang off your hands UpNorth! What do you think of it? Is it blade heavy? I've been swinging tramontinas for years modified with long handles, so they are sort of like a thin blade katana. but I saw those Condors at the SHOT show 5 years ago and they looked very cool and have wanted to try one ever since!

It is a little blade heavy, but not bad. It is a thick blade with a poor grind, like a wedge or chisel. I had to take an axe file to the shoulders and thin it out a bit. But it is darn fun to whack those branches off in one shot. The Barong under the heap is lighter, slightly thinner stock, and a better chopper. I had to thin that one out also. If done over I think that I would go for the Village or Bushcraft Parang instead. The Hudson Bay on the bottom right is a surprisingly good wood processor.....again, after the edge was thinned out. The new Condors are supposed to get thinner grinds. Fun toys to chop camp fire kindling up with. The wife just laughs and calls them my toys now, which I suppose they are. Knives, axes, camping, hunting, fishing, motorcycles, metal detecting.... I have many interests and a lot of them dovetail with the outdoor theme. Hell, I even have molds to make my own lead head jigs, and I used to buy the rubber tails by the one pound bag. I used to be heavily into jigging river Walleye and to bounce it off or near bottom was a snag about every 10 minutes and bye bye jig. Buy Lordy did I have fun with some big wallies !!! I even pulled pike out of there in the high teens. Big long brutes.

I buy these Tramontinas a dozen at a time...I've had my original for 20+ years...They are high carbon and thin, very fast and strong, I give them to my friends or sell them at the Wifes garage sale. I use it for lots of things and it is always with me...even when I travel on business, (drive) I have my old machete. I find an ash tree and make extended handles, sand them down, they look good and are comfortable and powerful swinging two handed...If somebody said I would have to survive and could only have one tool, it would be this......
ps, I should send you some pics of a deadfall I build, its an "H" frame design I came up with myself, you can build it all with nothing but a machete or a knife. Its way more sensitive than a figure 4, and it holds a lot more weight, so you can definitely catch fairly large things like raccoons. You being a rabbit snarer and all, I bet you could use it, and with your woodcraft skills, you could definitely make it..

My wife just pretty much asked that same question, John, and from her further comment asking if there were any new detectors out I would like to have, I got the feeling she might be willing to spring for one. Hmmm! I have been thinking about the Gray Ghost water proof head phones, but other then stepping in a hole while in the water and not drowning my land Gray Ghosts, not sure I need them as I don't plan on any diving. I wonder if she would go for a new SUV? Hmmm. Doubtful! HH jim tn

I want a 5mm wetsuit, weight belt and under armor hoodie, neoprene divers gloves and a lighthouse usb microscope combo with the ott light and adjustable stand. Will gladly settle for a back without pain, tho. Those knives mud and upnorth were showing would make some great gifts. A man or boy never, ever has enough knives. I put an edge on my old machete, army surplus type but can't use it much. I take it with me when I go dirt fishing on land and it comes in handy. I sharpen my machete different than others. I take an old axe stone and run it down to the point on either side and it's sharp enough for what I do with it. No files, no worrying about the bevel. Just run the coarse side of the stone and then switch to the finer side and it holds a pretty good edge. I sure hoped to do some dirt fishing this week, but after the workout in the pool Saturday, it may be the new year. Can't get the numbness out of my legs. HH.
