Solid & Functional MD Pouch

JP66

New member
Good morning (or evening depending on where you live)
I've been detecting off & on for a number of years and I think it's time to buy a new pouch.
Currently have a Garrett pin pointer & Lesch digging tool so looking for something that will accommodate those items plus a place for trash & coins.
I know there may not be one solution but any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Sunray makes an excellent leather detecting pouch, but I don't know if they are still available. I have had mine for close to ten years and I detect 120 to 150 times a year. It is still in good shape. I punched two small holes in the edge and attached my Garrett Propointer sheath with electrical zip ties. It has a large portion for trash and two smaller Velcro pockets that I use for my extra batteries and the other for "keeper finds". It also has two round PVC pipes on one end that I use for my screwdriver probes. It is a made for detecting pouch. You can buy a tool belt pouch at Sears-Home Depot that will need some modifying for your needs, but the Sunray is a perfect accessory.

I agree, the SunRay is worth every dollar but really hard to find, currently out of production. You might try placing a WTB ad in the classifieds and see what comes up. I used to buy construction pouches but I had to get a new one every year, they just did not last. My SunRay pouch will outlive me, I'm sure.

I bought a Minelab pouch from Backwoods Detectors and really like it. It has a zippered finds pouch, plenty of room for trash, and two holders for a Pro Pointer. I wear mine like a Bandolier and I really like it. Tried a bunch of them and was just never happy until this one.

Minelab Pouch

Those loops on the sides hold a Pro Pointer just right.

Leather equals hot and Heavy. There is no zippered finds pouch which means when you toss it in your car to ride home or trip over that tree root you can lose hard earned finds. Ask me how I know this.

My favourite one is the Garrett standard camo one, have the pro pointer outside on a lanyard and keep the basics in the zipped inner pocket, travel light as possible is my motto.

It needs a better belt. mine is all rolled up from the lesche hanging on it.. Have to get some thing stiff to sew to it I guess or do one of the other mods I have seen done.

Hanging on your side, on a belt heat isn't a problem and the only time weight was a problem is when I've got $15.00 or so in clad coins in it.
I've bee metal detecting sense 1981 and I've never owned a finds pouch with a zipper on it. For the first 15 years or so I used (we all used) a nail apron (no zipper). And to this date I can't think of a single item I lost with one. Now I am careful when I place it in the car and not just throw in.
Plastic, canvas, nylon, or the like is a joke!
Leather lets me connect all my tools to it and keep it all in one place and on one belt.
But, if somebody wants to eat lettuce and save a cow then go synthetic.

Nothing wrong with a zipper if you like it, but the dirt and debris from all the trash items (I use mine for a trash pouch as well) that I put in my finds pouch I'm sure the zipper wouldn't last very long, my pouch should out last the rest of my life.
My pouch weighs 8 ounces empty and no tools.

I have an extra leather pouch which has the large and small pocket switched.

I buy a WalMart fanny pack for $8. with the built in belt. The Lesche sheath and Xpointer holster slip on each side of the pouch and I wear the pouch in the front. Since I hunt mostly coins and jewelry, I have zipped areas for treasure and trash. The inner bigger area is divided also. It's light and has lasted a couple of years so far.

I acquired this pouch after my first leather one (pictured above) this came off Fleabay as well, its still two pocket, its still leather, but the inner smaller pocket is sewn in pretty flat and deeper than the small pocket in my other pouch, So I would suspect that smaller finds like coins and jewelry would ride a little safer. The larger outer pocket is a little bigger than the large pocket in my other pouch and being on the outside may be a little better for stuffing trash items in. Both pockets in this pouch has some sort of stiffener sewn in around the opening of them to keep them from drooping. I got this one for a spare while I had the money, the advantages hasn't been enough motivation for me to move my other hunting hardware over to the spare pouch yet.
I got this one off fleabay for like $12.00 shipped! but that's been maybe a year ago.

Mark, I use a similar pouch. I like it because the mouth stays open so it's easy to drop targets into it without fumbling around.
Unless you are rolling around on the ground, you won't lose any target you place in it either.

Guys no beef here at all, I actually have a bag just like the picture myself. I swing my detector with my left arm, so my bag stays on the right side. I use the minelab bag that has a zippered finds pouch. The zipper stays parially open while I am hunting. As I bend over the coins slide forward and are trapped. The zipper is for travelling to home and once I get home, I make sure the zipper is closed then I dump the junk and all the dirt into the trash. My digger is always in my right hand, so to keep from hitting the bag as I walk, I wear the bag over my shoulder like a bandolier. Since the bag is nylon it forms the shape of my body and allows me to just tuck my digger in the belt when I walk to the car. The minelab bag has two loops that hold a Pro pointer perfectly without any chance of loss. I also have a nylon string of test coins that I always carry looped on the bag. When I bought the minelab bag it was returned because someone did not like it. I love that thing myself but everybody does things a little different. I also fish using baitcaster reels and I am right handed. Funny thing is that I have never saw any wisdom in buying a right handed baitcaster, throwing with your right hand, then switching hands to reel in your lure. I buy left handed baitcasters and throw them with my right hand then reel with my left. My Son is left handed so he buys right handed reels and reels with his left.

The point I am trying to make is that there are options and what fits you might depend a lot on how you hunt. Everyone has different little quirks which makes things like bags highly dependant on the hunter more than the design.
