Some advice needed...

I recently got my T-2 and love it. I've got a number of other machines and am very impressed with the T-2. But when I try to fast grab GB the machine in my Virginia soil, it will almost never do it automatically. I have to do it manually, and it generally GB's at 60 or so. Also, the ferrous bars almost never show unless I'm over iron. I can't believe that my soil contains no iron. It's pretty much red clay, typical of northern Virginia. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Shenandoah Digger, I am up here in Northern Virginia, the Leesburg area, and our soil is a lot like your's. I always fast grab and the GB usually settles around 69 to 72. If I manually set it I find after hunting a bit I'll check the GB with a fast grab and it goes back to something in that range. My ferrous bars are usually zero or, at most, two bars. I find if the area I am in has a lot of iron trash the ferrous meter shows more bars. I was in North Carolina this past weekend and when I fast grabbed my GB the number was in the 40s, and that with sandy soil.

Bottom line, if you are getting a GB number around 70 here in Virginia I expect your machine is working fine. And if the ferrous meter is not registering or not registering much, that too is correct. I hope this helps a fellow VA hunter....:twodetecting:

Your observation on the red clay and Fe reading is interesting. I believe you own an X70 and you can use it to cross check the T2 reading. In essence it involves carefully Auto GBing the X70 using the standard 9 inch concentric coil, and then having the detector read out the results. It is detailed in the link below, and I for one would be interested in what that red clay reads on the X70 with the equivalent reading from the T2.

Thanks for your help Bill and Mark. I'll have to check the ground phase with the 70, and then I'll post the results. I found this morning regarding fast grab that it works best if you pump the coil quickly. The way I was trying to do it, like with the 70, was fairly slowly. With the T-2, like the manual says, pump it about twice a second. After reading this, I tried it again, and it ground balanced fine. But the ferrous meter usually reads nothing. On occasion it may go up to one bar or two for a few seconds. Thanks again.
