When I find sterlig silver in the water it has almost always turned black. If it was only dropped a few days before it might only have a gray tarnish.
If it has been there for many years it sometimes has a heavy black crust. Here are two old sterling rings with a heavy crust.

My old electrolosis unit died so I made a new one yesterday and used it last night to clean some rings. Here is the unit working on the big band maybe 30 seconds in. You can see the black starting to come off in the glass. By the time I was done it looked like a glass of crude oil.

Lastly here is one that I didn't get a before on, it was blackened but not crusty. I sure like this sterling spoon ring design.
