Some F44 talk

My F44 and F11 showed up last week. Want to post a little about the F44 first.

I liked the new look the first time I saw them. Very slim and trim. A very modern branding change for Fisher detectors.

The F44 has an interesting design for a coil. It is a 11” teardrop concentric transmit loop with an elliptical receive loop. The hot spot for tiny or deep signals is the bottom half of the receive loop near the butt end of the teardrop. The pointed front of the tear drop can be used to pinpoint just like a DD coil. The coil is designed to give good discrimination ability, good ground coverage, and good depth in most soils. It needs an air gap of about an 1” to 1-1/2” to work well. So it is not a coil to scrub on the ground.

The F44 runs on 2 AA batteries. So think about this. A lot of juice runs the audio speaker and/or headphones. There was a lot of work done in the act of balancing audio volume vs battery consumption. It came out well. But therein lays a secret of the F44. Good headphones. The 8 ohm headphones will work ‘ok’ and 32 ohm work better. However, 100 ohm and above work really good with the modulated audio options.

So, two things so far….at least a 1” air gap between coil and ground and headphones with higher ohm ratings. The F44 really likes my Koss headphones which are 100 ohms, and it works ok with my 8 ohm Fisher headphones but you can really tell the difference in the audio as the ohm ratings of the headphones go up. I recommend you spend some time on matching headphones to it. They don’t have to be expensive or even have volume controls as the F44 volume controls can meet that function but if you already own one or are planning to get one, spend some time with the headphone selection. I think you can buy Koss headphones all day long on the forum classifieds for about $30 - $35 shipped to your door.

The F44 has five operating modes, not counting Pinpoint. Four of those operating modes have their own preset audio selections. Yes they also have their own discrimination patterns but you can adjust discrimination pattern on all the operating modes but the all metal mode. I want to say a bit about the audio.

The Jewelry mode uses a non-modulated audio. This type of audio is often referred to as a ‘saturated’ audio. It is full on, full off. That’s great. I like saturated audio, however….The Jewelry mode, because of it’s full, saturated audio, will really highlight false signals. Regardless of the false signal’s origin; Ground noise and/or EMI noise, the Jewelry mode will enhance that audio report and may cause you to reconsider your detector choice. Don’t fret when you get into sites like that. Just change Modes and reset your discrimination pattern in a different mode.

The Best Thing about the F44 is the Custom Mode. I’ve been waiting a long time for affordable user selectable audio and finally it is here. There are five (5) audio tones or pitches that I get to decide how and where to use. There is a Bass tone, a Low tone, a Mid tone, a High tone and even a VCO tone option that I can assign as I choose to in the Custom mode. And when the VCO tone is assigned to the FE segment, I also get a VCO/Bass tone combination so I guess I could count that as a sixth tone. That is awesome, just totally awesome in my estimation. Selectable tone id for under $350. I’ve paid over $1,000 bucks for selectable tone id and I’m excited to see it in a more affordable detector.

I’ll add more later. The boss wants some work out of me today.

Nice info, Mike. I will add the F22 has selectable tones as well. Excellent feature!

Custom mode with iron volume set on 10 does the job for me :clapping:
On that settings F44 is almost deep as XP Deus on 12 khz and disc about 4-5, some coins signalized better than XP Deus. On first battle 1:0 for F44, I found about 1/3 more finds than Deus user.
I'm shocked when compared those two detectors. For that little money we have great detector.
I don't used headphones for some few tests but I will try maybe on weekend.

Thanks for the report, Mike. I am surprised of the lack of others reporting on the F44. I wanted one the first time I saw one and will be placing my order sometime next month. I am impressed with the features and depth seems very good but depth is not an issue with me as I normally hunt newer parks and schools anyway. What I am interested in is the light weight of the F44. I have the F75 DST and the F5 so no hurry for the purchase of the F44, but I still want it. I have been saving my clad finds since late last year and almost have enough to make the purchase. From the few reports/videos I find, I think the F44 will be a great detector for the price.

Hi James,
I wondered that myself.

I'll post more as I get time. Its a very nice detector.

to me it just says that the Deus is way over priced for what you get....
hence I won't be buying one, ever...but I will be buying the Omega 8500 when First Texas decides to actually come out with it...after teasing it way back in June....
it's 'Bang for the Buck' factor seems like it will be way up there...I like what's happening in the sub $1000 (VHF) detector space...

As You said XP Deus is over priced for sure but in other way his feather weight is unbeatable (even F2 or F44).
Second walk with F44 and now is 2:0 for Fisher in quantity of finds (not much more) but Deus user found one silver coin - luck I think.
Once more time I'm happy with iron volume, it's little chatty ONLY on iron heavy infested WET soils (after rain) but does the job quite well - on normal soil humidity is ideal.
In my opinion will be better for Fisher to sell F44 with 11" DD coil but maybe the price will be bigger.
Who have another greek series Teknetics or F5 or F19/G2 will be happy of F44 - exchange coils without any problems, even Nel or Detech.

Went to a local ocean beach today with the F44 and found my first ever ring. Was working the upper slope when I got a nice signal (46) in jewelry mode. I thought it would be another bottle cap, but dug it anyway. Say hello to a nice tungsten ring. Not expensive, but still a memorable first for me. Take note that the ring did ring up 46-47 since there doesn't seem to be any guidance available on Tungsten or Platinum numbers. Will try to post a pic of the ring tomorrow - to much shadow effect using lights on my desk.

Mike I am looking at the F44 as my next detector. If you adjust the settings on coin mode does the settings hold or stay for the next hunt? Is there a limit to what you can adjust in coin mode or any other mode? I know custom mode it open to adjusting. With the 11" coil is it nose heavy? I am not a fan of big coils. I would prefer a 5"- 6" coil. Weight is very important. The lighter the better. Balance comes next. Next thing is adjustability, to get it to work at difficult sites? Thanks Mike any info would be appreciated.........Z/Jerry

Hi Zeekeys,

Yes, the F44 saves all your settings except for ground balance. Any changes you make to any of the modes will be saved. You can also factory reset back to factory settings.

The All Metal mode is the only mode that cannot be adjusted.

All the remaining modes allow notching out or notching in all of the segments FE through 9.
All the remaining modes allow the FE audio to work.
Only the Custom Mode allows the audio selectability.

I do not find it nose heavy.

I need to post about the display soon.

Thanks Mike and very good write up on the F44. Looking forward to more information on the F44. The F44 will fit my hunting needs just fine. Thanks again......Z

Before dropping a ton of cash on expensive coils, you may consider the $59 7inch concentric. I find this coil is great for trashy areas. I havnt taken it off since I got it.
