Well, I'm finally getting time to post what I found this past weekend and I am sure a lot of you have been waiting and wondering on how I did. Well!, I've done better but hey!, I can't complain.
Tim and I once again hooked up in the search for some Old Coins on Saturday. I knew of a spot that was on the way to where we were going and we almost completely passed it up until Tim told me that once we got to the original destination, that we would most likely stay there the entire day and pound it to see what we could get. So, we stopped at an Old Ball Diamond that Tim knew nothing about but I did. I knew that Barber was there since I stopped with Dale once before and Dale found a Barber Quarter along with some Indian Heads and the other usual Old Coins. As we pulled up behind this Elevator, where the Old Ball Diamond once was, we found out that a building was about to go in part of the area. There was dirt scraped down about 6" and piled up and some spread out on one side of the Ball Diamond. We got out and started working it. Tim shortly found his first Keeper of the day, and one he owes me. He pops out a 1903 Barber Quarter at 2" (this now being his 9th of the year), which would have been about 8" Deep when the grass was over it before being scraped off. He then walks into a Silver Quarter and then finds a Wheat or 2 and also finds a Silver Roosevelt Dime. I couldn't believe his luck on the 2 Quarters but at least we saved them from being lost forever. I found a few Wheat Pennies and 4 Silver Roosevelt Dimes before we left. I suppose by the time I get back there to that site, that the building will be up and who knows what else may be sitting on yet another Old Balldiamond lost to changing times.
We then headed to the original destination. We got there and we both decided to use the Joey Coils we had along since Tim is now seeing this Coil can get some SERIOUS DEPTH and SEPARATION. We detected until we were exhausted from the hot day of detecting, which had to be around 8:00pm. Tim had found 12 Wheats all together on Saturday (if I remember right) and also found a Toy Car, some Jewelry Items, a Large Bone that may have been from a Cow, 3 Older 7-Up Bottles that he dug out of the ground since he seen the tops sticking out of the soil, a Barber Dime, and 2 Merc's. The Jewelery Items may have been owned by the same person since the Ring had a Pink Stone in it and the Necklace he had found had the exact same Color and Shape Stone as the Ring, both being pretty Old and been sitting in the ground for decades I figure. They were found on opposite sides of a Road. What I got was 2 Barber Dimes, 3 Merc's, 5 Roosevelt Dimes, an Indian Head, 24 Wheat Pennies, a Foreign Coin dated 1918, being a 10 Pfennig and the usual Misc. Finds including a Large Bone like Tim's that I dug out of the ground. The Bone won't be Pic'ed since it is larger than the Scanner Glass.
Sunday, I decided to go up to a site that I have wanted to try since an Old Fairgrounds sat on it at one point in time. Tim and Dan did well at this site when they stopped before but I soon found out that it was going to be harder than I thought. There also has been someone else detecting it since I found a few plugs there. I decided to use the Joey Coil since it has the Depth that I figured I would need to find anything Old. I started out along some Tree's and found a couple Wheats and then I headed out to a large open area. It was really quiet out there but I did manage to sniff out 2 Merc's and a few more Wheats. I also found yet another War Nickel and also a Surface 1949 Jefferson Nickel someone lost in a large Coin spill I came across. There was Dimes, 2 Nickels, and several Pennies scattered on top of the ground. I stayed for awhile and then decided to pack it up for the day at about 4:00pm.
On the way back home, there was a Cemetery about a Half-Mile off the road that I have drove by numerous times in the past and never stopped to see if it had a Parking Area. Well, this time I did and as I suspected, it had one. I got out and looked at a Brick Structure that looked like an Entrance to something that told me that the Cemetery was organized in 1872. I thought Holy Crap, there could be Seated here. As luck would have it, no Seated came to light, at least that time. I did find a War Nickel, and about 8 Wheats here. I got a 28 on Digital about 8" Deep and thought Seated! I dug a plug and removed some dirt. Finally got it out of the hole and seen a Silver Edge staring back at me that was Smooth. I thought for sure that it was going to be a Worn Seated Dime but it wasn't. It still turned out to be something good though, and in fact, is probably worth more than what a Worn Seated Dime would be worth. I broke the dirt free and there staring back at me was an Aluminum Trade Token. Yes!!! This one was Good For 5c In Trade and on the back reads Bills Chevrolet Garage, Halstad, Minn. For Aluminum, this Token is in Fantastic Shape. I also noticed a Depression is a section of a large open area here at the Cemetery which tells me that there had to be a Small Church here once. I will have to go back since there is also a Church I noticed that sits in some tree's that is barely noticeable about a Mile Out fairly close to where the Cemetery is. Luckily, no one has hit the Church either and I will have some luck in finding some Barbers there.
I also stopped at a Town Park. I had found a Seated Dime and an Old Brunswick Token here the year before so I knew there could be something still there. This was actually the first stop of the day on Sunday. I only found a Wheat Penny and a War Nickel for Coins but did find some kind of Star Item, an Old Valve Stem from the Old Cars back in the 20's, and a part of a Cuff Link.
The totals were 12 Silver, which were 2 Barber Dimes dated 1911 and 1916, 5 Mercury Dimes dated 1920-d,1927,1942-d,1943-d,1945-d, and 5 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1948,1953-d,1959-d,1962-d, and 1963-d. For Nickels, I found 4 of them consisting of 3 War Nickels dated 1943-p,1945-d, and 1945-s and a 1949 Jefferson Nickel. For Wheat Pennies, I found 38 more. They are dated 09,10,12,17,18,19-d,(2)19-s,20,28-d,30-d,(4)35-d,35-s,37,37-d,39,39-d,39-s,40-d,40-s,(5)41-d,42,44,(4)44-d,45,(2)46-d, and 47-d. I also found 1 Indian Head dated 1897 that is the last Coin with the Wheats. I have some Yard work that I should get done tonight at where I work but I will get the rest of the finds posted tonight. It should be up by 10:00pm tonight with Pics of the Foreign Coin, Token, and Misc. that I found also. So Stay Tuned! Thanks for looking at this portion of the finds and as always, Good Luck and HH to you all that get out during the week.
