Garrett Metal Detectors had its humble beginnings in Charles Garrett's 200 square foot garage shop where for the Christmas of 1967 he had managed to build 25 detectors to fill orders from customers who had answered his ads in True West and Frontier Times magazines.
Prior to this Charles had used boxes found around his home to mail his scant few detectors in but an order this size presented a problem. At the time Charles worked as an engineer for Geotech and the company gave out hams to all its employees for Christmas - then discarded the boxes. Charles looked at these rugged boxes and decided they were just the thing to mail his new detectors in so he gathered up an ample supply, packed his detectors inside, stuffed them with newspaper, and mailed them off to his customers to arrive for Christmas. All arrived safe and sound and not one customer complained of their new detector smelling like ham.. Charles and his wife Eleanor have come a long way since then when an order of only 25 detectors presented a problem to be overcome. I wonder if they think back to that day as their company now ships out thousands of detectors daily. .
