I'm new to the world of metal detecting, I thought it would be easy to pick out a metal detector and get searching, boy was I wrong. So could someone give me some advise on what to look for when purchasing a detector. looking for brands and ease of use and my budget is 800 $$$ give or take. I live in Kansas would like to find coins, relics etc.

Go above on any of these Forum pages find the dealers, and read what they have.. Check out several. Some have comparison charts.

Remember only thing in advice you will get, is opinion.. Make your own decision from informed sources.

Read, read, read, and go to a dealer if possible. Nothing will take the place of a hands on demonstration.

The detector thats right for me, or someone else, is maybe not right for you. I am not saying you can not, or will not find a detector thats ok for you..... getting opinions, but many of us have tried a lot of different detectors finding the one correct for us....

Thank you for the post. You are right about the opinions. I will continue to read and review. I just didn't reallies so many choices out there.

You just have to wade through the hoopla and decide what you think you like best..

If there is a detecting club in your general area - join it and talk to some of the people and get their opinions about detectors. If not, ask around to try to find some detectorists in the area who can talk with you. Nothing beats talking with a detectorist - better yet, go out with them on a hunt. At the least, check the various Internet forums and subscribe to a detector magazine like Western & Eastern Treasures or try to get some old issues and read the reviews. This will help lead you to an informed decision. Good luck.

Hunters in your area are your best source. Personally i look at not only the detector, but the price of replacement parts, availability for repairs, service after the sale, and whats the warranty... are they traferable and for how long. If you find what you want id recomment you NOT TRADE UNTIL ITS PAID FOR ITSSELF. By then you know if it was the machine for you and if you like the hobby. There isnt an easy method short of wadeing thru material, reading, and talking to people.
