Some Issues....

Hello Everyone,

I have a Xterra 705 /w 10x5" Double-D 18.75kHz 9" Concentric 7.5kHz

I encounter three Issues in which I cant seem to overcome.

1. Unit will not power on with head phones plugged in ???

2. When detecting on certain beaches and rivers that contain black sand here in panama I get major OL happening every where I swing the coil with tracking on or off and auto GB beach mode on or off that's below 30 I have try ed playing with the settings such as turning sensitivity down and using prospect mode with the iron mask way up and still no go the only thing that seems to help is holding the coil a foot above the ground this seems to happen above the high line or below the low any where there is water present or dark sand not sure what else to try this is with either coil 10x5" Double-D 18.75kHz 9" Concentric 7.5kHz is my machine faulty or is this too high of mineralization for the machine to handle? I say this because it is my understanding that the higher the |GB number the higher the mineralization True or false ? if so shouldn't the GB number be a lot higher if heavily mineralized. when I dig the OL sometimes there a can or nothing I can't Discriminate it out as I would really like to search some of these places.

3. When getting a strong 12 signal at tide line I dig a hole and it fills up with water there is nothing in the hole I dig a hole beside it a two feet away it gives me the same strong 12 above the hole filled with water i re AUTO GB to make sure my GB IS right and requires no GB adjustment when in auto track mode i can tell what the GB is this happens with with out the GB mode in tracking or not when I switch to prospect mode it says something is there in pin point but however how far I dig I come up with zilch

Well, the nearest salt water to me is more than a days drive, so I can't address the salty issues, but I can answer a question or two and make a couple suggestions.

First, the higher the GB number the lower the mineralization. Around here I often hunt in ground that GB's in the teens and low twenties. There is a method for measuring mineralization written up by Barnacle Bill in the FAQ FAQ section of this forum.

Second, if the unit won't power up with the headphones plugged in, a call to MineLab Customer Service is in order.

And the suggestions would be, to try using the GB Tracking Offset feature, along with an HF DD coil, and run in Beach Tracking mode. Setting the Offset to -2 (just for example) will tell the machine that the ground is slightly more mineralized than it is when in Tracking Mode, and will compensate a little more than "normal". These suggestions should make the machine more stable.

I will try the offset 2Moro also I did the Barnacle Bill thing and I get somthing like 06 55 10 and sometimes it was an 00 59 12 with GB around zero and 10 then jumps up to 75 this clears up a lot of things the soil is highly mineralized and changes alot

Also I found this headphones issue to only happens now when I put the battery's in or if the unit has been powered off for a bit I have to start it with the headphones unplugged then it will power on or off with them in weird, I will call support and post my findings

As far as the headphone issue goes, you'll have to send it in for repair. Most likely a loose connection. It was an issue that showed up on a number of occasions on the early X-Terra models.
Try the beach mode and see if that helps at the beach. If you are hunting in the area where you are passing between the wet and dry sand, then that will cause a lot of falsing. Detect each area separately. You'll loose half your depth in the wet sand. That happens with all VLF detectors.If that doesn't work, you might want to pull out an Excalibur.

The only other thing that I can think of that may help with the instability, would be to slow down your swing speed. Give the machine time to see and adjust. If the mineralization varies that much, slowing down should significantly reduce falsing by making the transitions more gradual.

You just reminded me Old longhair. Brett, make sure you keep your coil level with the ground as you get to the end of your swing. I have no idea how experienced you are, but a rooky mistake is to swing the coil up at the end of the swing. that can cause falsing.
