Someone help me understand iron mask

I have an explorer se on the way and I have read the manual a couple times and have played around with the simulator. One thing I still do not quite understang it the iron mask. What is the difference if you have it turned on or off? What would be a good setting? Thanks.

It's just a quick way to set a discrimination pattern along the ferrous axis - all conductivity values at that ferrous location are masked - no magic circuitry kicks in - though it sounds almost like it's doing something special - not explained well in the manual - a setting of 25 is reasonable on the SE. The E-Trac went one logical step further with an Iron Mask and a Conductive Mask.

when you press the Iron Mask button it shows a all metal screen that lets you hear everything and at that point you can adjust masking over the low sounding iron starting at the left side and moves to the right of the screen(almost all iron targets show up on left side of screen). The key here is if you hunt in Ferrous you can hunt in all metal, wide open with no masking,or add alittle masking to your liking. And if you hunt in Conduct you CAN NOT hunt wide open, you will have to add some masking over iron sounds. My suggestion is to built a coin and gold pattern using the edit and learn mode and save it, then use it in the field and when you get to many signals under the coil at one time, go in to Iron Mask screen, have it set to all metal, wide open then you will be able to separate each signal to hear what is good.
