Something I learned ~ When they are babies, they just need diapers, baby powder and soft squeaky things. A few years later they need braces, college a

... meet in-laws you hope to never wine and dine again.

Then you'll learn about how tough it is to be newly married, have huge bills and how effectively they can tap good ol' mom and dad for loans that will be re-paid just after our national debt is paid.

Then come grandkids and all the baby gear you'll need while they visit ... and on and on and on.... until you rest in peace. But you love them and will do most any reasonable things you can to help. Good luck, and start painting again, you'll need it.

..... a total wedding budget $ figure .... if they went over it .... someone other than the perky Nancy and I would pay for it .... if they came in under budget, I'd write them a check for the difference. One out of three daughters got a check from me. I even encouraged all three of them to elope like Nancy and me and like Nancy's parents did ... darn it .... no takers. Just suck it up Vernon and get ready to spend some real money.

We were married at her mothers house with about 20 people present. My 'best man" was a woman. We moved into a cabin in the woods on 10 ac with no electricity and no running water. We payed $12,000 for it ($2.000 down and $100 a month). I was making a living as an artist, my wife was going to college until she had our first daughter. As soon as we moved in I dug a well by hand and we had running water when the generator was running.Used an outhouse for the first 3 years until I put in our own septic system using a 500 gallon fuel tank.. I could go on and on but we sold that house for $122.000 clear 11 years later and moved to Virginia.

Below is our house in Alaska when we sold it. I added (built) 2/3rds of the size myself, to include; both garages (was still working on the one to the far right). 3bed rooms, 2 baths, school room, BIG STORAGE/UTILITY ROOM, all the decks (3) and all the windows build by me. Plus the ceder siding. (2 pickup loads for 50 bucks!) Got the front door from the dump and re-did it after a bear tore up the first one.
