Something to get you going -

steve in so la

Well-known member
Some years back I was new at it and decided to detect an older school. After a while I got a Walking Liberty half under a tree where people sat out of the sun. I was thrilled, went home for lunch & to show my wife.

After lunch I went back and worked my way across the street (still on the school grounds) and got a good signal in the middle of the lawn. I could hardly believe my eyes - another Walking Liberty half!

After a while I went home for the day but the point I want to make here is that anyone with little experience & the cheapest detector made could have found these. They were both shallow and huge. So if you are a beginner or not they are out there if you want them, Steve in so az

Yep! That would get me going!

The same happened when my ex and I were detecting a large, old park and we were new at it....I found a beautiful silver half-dollar and was thrilled and we found many rings but no diamond ones...unless teeny ones! Wish we could have been experienced when we started detecting those older parks as we could have found lots of goodies like another member of our club did later on......He found wonderful goodies....my ex and I were divorced by then...so weren't hunting it like he was! But silver and rings were more plentiful back in the 80's and 90's than they are now unless one can find virgin territory, but like you, if the detector is working and ya go over the right spot....the silver and gold will be found, especially, if it is shallow!  Ma Betty

Betty - I started in 1980 - sure worked hard at learning. No internet, almost no dealers to help, etc. On every outing I would get at least 1 or 2 silver. Can only imagine the 60's & 70's :) Every once in a while I still find a virgin site. Last year I dug about 700 coins at one place in 2 days. Steve

My ex started in 1980 with his first detector and then when I wanted to use it with him, he bought me a used one in 1981....but wasn't working good amd traded for a small newer one but didn't like it either, so a new CoinMaster was purchased in 1983 and begin to find goodies like my ex was doing! Those older ones were too heavy for me to swing so I ended up with my White's Spectrum XLT in 1994 ( ex was gone in 1986) and I used it up until I wasn't able to hunt any more! I still have it and really like it too much to get rid of it, for I'm hoping that someday, I can go again....but when I don't know????? Wheaties and silver were more plentiful back then but didn't do as well on rings and other pcs of gold like you have done! May God Bless you to keep on, keepin' on with Jesus and being blessed to find the best goodies!  Ma Betty

Betty - My first one was a Whites 5000 D. It sure tried my patience to ground balance it frequently. Steve

Very good point!

My first detector was a White's also and, with what most of us use today to find treasures, it surprises me we found anything with those old machines. There remains some awesome finds out there somewhere but it's getting harder and harder to find virgin sites to hunt.
