Sov xs and 8" BBS coil -Pulled my deepest nickle ever in tough Oregon soil @ 10"

Sadly it was just a normal 80's nickel...

Yesterday I hunted a well worn field where almost all the shallow targets are gone. I have been having a teaching session with myself trying for the deeper coins.

I'm in a area with highly mineralized soil & many complain of poor depth around here-tell me about it. My AT Pro ground balance #'s are 90-93 typical. Most detectors poop out around 6-8" for a nickel depending on conditions. Yesterday was perfect-an open field with little EMI & very moist soil.

I reverse hunt-all metal is the only way to get real time fast response for searching. The audio clues are there for ferrous/non ferrous if you listen carefully. The response in disc can be very iffy on deep targets. I try to judge based on depth. If I can get a "rev the motor" response even briefly on a small isolated target its a dig.

Anyhow-walking in a deep grass area that rarely gets mowed I had a small response. Walking around the target it was small-sharp-and isolated-no double blips. The disc response was very weak but it tried to rev consistently. I dug the full depth of my pro-pointer for the nickel. And the grass was at least 3" deep matted above the target.

So that's a record for me-a 7" nickel was my previous best. Strange thing for me is I get an occasional old coin some silver and tokens-but Buffalo's are nowhere to be found. I have found one-on the surface almost-and that's it.

And for me-the small coil works best for this style of hunting. I can't get along with my 10 x 12 SEF due to the slower response. Maybe its the soil conditions but I have just found it easier to use the 8" (actually 7 1/4 but you knew that).

Cheers!

I've always like the BBS 800 and the little Tornado coil. Both coils have excellent depth separation, and stable even with the sensitivity maxed.I have a 10x12 SEF and in open areas like the performance of this coil.HH Ron
