Sovereign meter mod 550 to 180

I couldn't find info on how to re scale a 550 meter so I thought I would post the info
from the old Sovereign mods website. There is a kit you can buy that supplies all the
parts also.

There are 2 variations of R1

Change R2

Change Potentiometer

I also have the kits to do this also with the resistors to do either of the 2 meters if anyone needs one.

Ron, Are you still building 180 meters for the Sov GT? I need one. Thanks, Tony

I found that I liked the 550 to the 180 at times. The 550 has more resolution than the 180 so there were more splits between the targets EG: trash and coin alike. The way I figured it could split the hairs better. Not sure this matters much as I am a tone hunter and would only check the meter to confirm what I already knew. This can be accomplished in the same way as guessing your targets without a meter. The only factor affecting that meter between ones ears is the volume control which should not be moved as it highly affects tones you hear.

Does anyone know if i am able to use a 1.1 OHM 1% resistor instead of the 1 OHM 1% version that is recommended? No stores in my area stock the 1 OHM version. I'm hoping to avoid ordering online as i'd like to have a swing within the next few days.

Thanks,

Bender

Yes they are hard to find it seems like the 1% tolerance The other items was the variable resistor for the user calibration of the meter which I had no luck at any of the store around here and I had to order mine in from Australia if remember correctly, so I ordered in about 100 of them plus all the other items I needed to do the job as the price was good on them. I then made up some kits for others that wanted to do this mod.
You also know there is 2 different variation of this meter depending on which one you have as 1 resistor is different so the replacement is different, so I would send both of them in my kits I made up.
If you need 1 of the resistors I would be happy to send you the one you need free as I have some around yet, or if you need the whole kit with everything you will need I have those too I can fix you up with.

Thanks so much Rick!

I also had a kind offer from chopz54, however i managed to find the elusive 1m 1% resistors here in Australia this morning, so i'm now the proud owner of a 180 meter!

After calibrating it, it feels good to have said goodbye to the 550. Once the heat settles down (yup, very hot down here this weekend  ) i'll see how it performs in the salt.

Thanks again. You detector swingers are defintiely a generous bunch :beers:
