Sovereign "Silver Mode" :detecting:

I hunt an old park that I'm mainly looking for older coins in, so I tried it last weekend. The results were interesting - I was able to swing a little faster as it kept the threshold easier, when I hit trash, if it did sound off, it's poor tonal quality was more pronounced then with no disc, and I was getting great depth.

If you search some of my recent posts, you will see the two seated dimes and a flying eagle cent I found at a new random site. I only had an hour to hunt and I did not have time for dealing with trash. So i set up in just near max disc, anf I found a few deep indian head cents in that short time to warrant a return to find the lower conductor finds. The point I am making is that if I started hunting that park, in minimum disc with the little time that I had. I may have not returned since the place was loaded with trash. Silver mode is useful to reverse guage a site. Usually people hunt a new site with little disc to get a feel for the site. When you are hitting a site that you know has a ton of trash and only have a short time to feel it out. Do the opposite, hunt in high disc to see if the site gives up a few coins to warrant a return with minimum disc.

take care

I tried this just yesterday and the results were promising.

We have a 125 year old park where the coins are extremely deep. Averaging a flood every 30 years, which deposited from 3-6" each flood, has made this site a real challenge for even the deepest detectors. Over the years I have thinned out most of the good targets down to about 10" with a Eagle Spectrum and my DFX. I bought a new SE earlier this year, in hopes of getting beyond that 10", but it didn't really seem to get me any more depth than the 10".

I got my Sovereign GT about a month ago, thanks Radarwill, to use mainly for relic and beach hunting but have tried it in this park as well. It's very deep but the years of trash make it very difficult to use. It's more of a dig everything detector, and in this park, thats just not an option. I tried the "Silver Mode" as mentioned thinking if I could discriminate out all but the good stuff I should get a few goodies. Well it worked. I cranked the discrimination up all the way, testing a coin to make sure it wasn't lost, but didn't know where I should put the notch. I have pulled 4 wheats now at a very impressive depth. My problem is it has a real problem with iron. Out of the 7 targets I dug 3 were iron that read out just like a coin. I would like to find a way to eliminate the iron because I don't feel comfortable digging so deep as it is, it wouldn't be so bad if I knew they were good. It's very time consuming to dig a 12" deep hole in the city park and still try to leave things in good shape. I really hate digging for 10-15 minutes only to recover a rusted nail.

Southwind if you drop the sens down a bit that will help combat iron falsing with high coin tones (although you could loose a small amount of depth, also using auto sens will help, but again you'll loose depth). I'm starting to get the iron falsing figured out a little. . Checking the target for size, raising the coil, hitting it in AM mode, dropping the sens a bit for more stability, and doing a 360 around the target to see if the numbers drop into the negative iron region is helping vet out iron falses, but I still am digging them if they sound promising. Thus far to no avail, although I'm digging less of them. This upcoming weekend I'm planning to hunt at GGP and will test out the "silver mode" further, as it was very promising the last time I tried it. When your hunting an 1100 acre park, digging everything isn't (IMHO) practical.

What is the silver mode on soveriegn? I'm the guy thinking about getting a soveriegn. Is it just a switch? I haven't actually held a soveriegn in my hand.

I was happy with the results so far even with the iron falsing. Out of the targets I chose to dig, 3 were iron and 2 were coins. The iron was the size that would cause a problem. One was a very rusted bolt about an 1" long, another was a rusted large diameter square nail about 2" long and the last was a chunk of iron about 1x1" and 1/4" thick rusted very bad. All were very very deep. I'd guesstimate about 12". What I'm really excited, and somewhat depressed, about is that I get 4-5 signals on pretty much every swing. The bad part is I can't really dig a 12" hole every time I get a signal. I'm hoping I can find some little difference that will help me tell the small iron from the coins.

Iron will not repeat as well as a coin will in my experience with it. If I get one of those signals I will try to make it repeat and move the coil so it is at the tip of the coil, then go around it with the coil seeing that it still repeats in the same area. Now some of those so deep it is hard to get them to repeat much I will now go to pinpoint and go side to side with the coil to center it and in many case I will see the signal is iron it is one way, or will move. If it is still there and able to center it going side to side I will center it and push the coil to the ground so it dont move off that spot and turn 90 degrees and go side to side again centering the target. When centered the target will be right under the very center of the coil if done right, so I will hold the coil still and switch back to disc and very slightly wiggle the coil. If it nulls it is iron, but if the threshold does nothing or starts going more positive I will be digging. Helps me a lot and in most cases I can tell in disc by going around the target as it may sound good one way, but when you come at a different angle it will null or move.

Hi Cal
Silver mode is more to do with your ears, than the disc dial. Running it maxed will knock out the distractons but the task remains to listen for the highest, deepest, cleanest responses.

HI Rick,, You do the same as me and and i find a lot of coins on iron. The sov. nulls a lot on iron and most people think it is masking out the coins also. NOT true. I hunt with no disk and max. power and hear everything. that the coil goes over. If your sweeping and it nulls there is iron below but during the null if there is a coin in that iron you will hear it as you pass the coil over it , the sound may not be what everyone expects from a coin but it tips you off to check it out close. Try everything circle it pinpoint it but do the wiggle and if it just sounds good dig. Harry

I found this to be true as well. A site I hunt has tons of pull tabs of all shapes broken, twisted etc. . There are multiple tones and ID numbers on these tabs. So I my disc. 1 notch from max disc. and let me tell u, a world of differance for the better. I went to other areas that I just covered and found 2 coins. The unit ran much more quiet, due to high disc. setting. I still managed to get very good depth still. I picked up a mercury dime 7" deep under a 2" tree root which was next to the tree. I was using the 8" bbs coil. sensitivity was just off max setting.
When u want silver coins in and old area the silver mode does it for me. I covererd alot more ground in this mode as well. I may miss gold, I'm willing to make the sacrifice because silver coins are harder to come by.

Usually high disc. will affect depth and always hunt with Disc, set to pick up low foil as I like to hear it all..Perhaps depth not affected by high disc. but will have to try it come the spring as I can see in trashy areas might be the way to go without John Philip Sous'a band following you around with many tones...
