Won it at auction with some fishing gear. Untested and missing the rechargeable battery. Both control box and meter mount were cracked an unusable. Dirty and needed cleaning.
Made up a test battery pack and plug the detector into it. Turned on the power switch and it fired right up. It worked perfectly! Decided to keep it, as I was familiar with using one.
Owned Sovereign models in the past XS2a, 2 Elites and a GT.
Let the detector sit awhile, had an idea, do a mod and make it more to my liking.
Didn't like the original s-handle configuration with the control box mounted up front or under the arm cuff. Had a Compass Scanner s-handle gathering dust, an idea popped into
my head. Mount the Sov XS control box onto the Compass handle. The Sov lower rod fit into it nicely and just about the right length, will shorten it some later. Picked up 3 Lithium-ion
rechargeable batteries, made a battery box. To be mounted under the armcuff. This turned out to be a nice set-up.
The meter was the next issue to tackle, had two broken mounts attached to the Sov. s-handle. Managed to salvage one, repair the cracks, then encase it with fiberglass matte cloth and epoxy resin.
Now usable and positioned it on top of the control box. Makes the detector look top heavy but, in reality it was not. Shortened the meter cable to a more usable fitting length.
Shortened the search coil cable as well, way too long. Finally waterproofed the white 8" Coinsearch coil.
The new look Sov XS now feels pretty good in the hands, balances better, nice swing to it. Still a bit heavy like most vintage detectors, shouldn't need a Popeye forearm to swing it. No reason to swing a Sov
at a fast pace anyways, not in any race to cover large areas anymore. Getting old does that to you....LOL An old detector for an old man..........
