New to Minelab products. A neighbor is selling a sovereign xs w/8" coil and cover, sunray digital meter, sunray probe and carbon fiber lower shaft and asking $500 for the package. Is it worth it??

Jim,the Minelab XS Sovereign in good condition with rechargeable battery and alkaline pack, with no mods 350.00. Sunray Meter 100.00 S-1 probe another 100.00 added.Total est value 550.00.For 500.00 its worth it you'll get all or most of your money back if the Sovereign doesn't work out.For a flip to make a couple of bucks not worth the effort.I like the Minelab lower shaft better than a substitute. If it has a straight shaft asm that's a plus.Wave 450.00 in cash and see what happens.Good Luck Ron

Ron. Thank you for your advice. It is very much appreciated. " Hopefully " I'll be testing it out on the beach here in Massachusetts very soon !!

Might not be worth it. The XS had the plus that the iron mask can be switched off which was dropped on the next three versions. The drawback is age. It was voted the detector of the year in 1997. Long time ago and it had been replaced 1998/1999. Then there's been suggestions that Minelab are ceasing repairing machines over ten years of age.

The coil if it is the original 8" solid white one it is a little better than the follow up open "800" coil that just over 7". Trouble is its not waterproof which lead to many failures.

The battery system was upgraded for the next model (XS-2)

No shielding in the original control box and the shielding on the coil wire breaks down over time.

Unlike the later models some of the adjustments are internal. Means that if you want to use them you have to open the control box and start moving jumpers rather than just flicking a switch.

The Original Sovereign had the iron mask switch and no volume control knob. The XS if in good condition is a great detector. Most XS models have the shield. The XS2 Battery system is a pressure connection system unlike the plug-in connection like the Original and XS,which won't come loose in the field during use. There is no need to take the box apart for adjustment unless some unwanted modification was made. There is a jumper for the silent mode operation and the tone can be changed but I would leave well enough alone.Rule number 8 don't fix it if it's not broken. Good Luck Ron

If in good condition. How many are in good optimum tune after ten or more years ?

Then you can't say most had a shield because they sold a shed load before it was realised a shield was needed.

The "if its not broken don't fix" arguement should be explained to Minelab because a couple of models down the line they did fix it and replaced the internal jumpers with external controls as so many had found benefits in making these adjustments.

I have had my XS since new for eleven years and it is still running without fault. Mine does not have the the iron mask switch and has the internal jumpers set for a background threshold tone (better to have the threshold tone).
The Sov was, is and always will be an excellent saltwater beach machine.and is great in the parks and gardens and is an excellent relic machine.I will not be parting with mine any time soon.
500 dollars is maybe slightly on the high side, try to get the price down a bit, although to get an equivalent machine new you will have to fork out more than 1000 bucks.

With the S-1 probe and Sunray meter price subtracted you are paying $300.00 for the XS Sovereign. The GT does have improvements over the Older XS,but most coin shooter's including myself never use these.Any used equipment you are taking a chance even with GTs that have been dropped, dunked or modified by curious user's.Value and performance wise the XS is a good deal.I have owned four XS units and had a problem with one ended up being a bad coil. The GT is a nice unit I have owned three, but performance wise both units will find dimes at 12 plus inches with a 10 inch coil.Any older Sovereign with a 180 meter and probe will out perform a GT without these by a big margin.Shed load or boat load without the foil shield early models didn't have these shields(aluminum foil over plastic knew a professor who wore foil underneath his hat.)not sure which model numbers first use the shield, again very early models. The XS2 battery system was a production change neither an upgrade or improvement, but still a great detector as with all Sovereigns.HH Ron
