spurious noise problem elininated

With two first model explorer XS's had falsing increasingly getting worse over time at any sensitivity setting. Battery life gracefully degredated and as of late, machines would cut on and off by themselves or when turned on go to the factory preset when advanced programming was expected.
Found the following: Where the battery pack makes contact, at the coiled spring contacts inside the handle, there is a green phenolic circuit board material that the contacts are mounted on. With a strong small light, observed on the board, between the two contacts, was some type of deposit that looked dull and wet as the board should be uniform and with a semi-shine. This was occurring between the contacts on both my and my friend's machine. None of the battery packs were leaking and the source of the material is unknown. Took a long soft artist brush and brushed the area clean. Board between contacts, once clean, installed battery pack and turned on. Machines running like new (both were 5 years old) noising gone, battery life is longer than 1 hr on recharge nimh type, now 4 plus. Seems to hunt deeper and doesn't turn themselves on by themselves. So far so good. Anyone else had this happen?

Thanks for the information. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

just posted my reply to another the same time you posted your question. yes exactly, no telling how long i have had this problem and how much stuff I have missed. also get 8 hi milli amp NiMH, 2100 or higher, AA batteries and fast charger. Wallmart sells them. Put the batteries in your plain battery pack. You'll get at least 8 hrs run time, maby more.

honda;
I have 2300's in my regular bat pack and get about 10 hours time.

I discussed this with a technician who developing his own detector. He has repaired two Exps with power supply problem when some resistors inside were damaged due to moisture condensation with subsequent electrolyses, due to permanent current in the circuit, when storing the device with battery inside. His recommendations were always to take out the battery during storage after expected frost-warm temperature drop .

Mine returns to the factory preset from time to time when I power it up, I'm going to check that.
On the subject of Nimh batteries, around Christmas Sams club had a pack of 8 2500 mah batteries and a 4 bay charger for about $23.00. I think they were Eveready brand.
I got them for my ex wifes digital camera and she gets some good life out of them.

Just one thing about NiMH batteries. You have to charge them at least once every month to keep them from going bad even if they have not been used.They form some kind of bubbles inside that charging gets rid of. Keep them charged and they will do they will do the Bunny deal, over & over & over & over &----.

I had emailed Minelab about the batteries and they said to charge them once every 2 to 3 months to keep them in good shape, not every month.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE EXPLORER XS. IT WAS FROM THE SWEAT THAT WAS DRIPPING FROM MY ARM DURING HUNTING. I PUT SILICONE AROUND THE JOINT AT THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT. HAVE HAD NO MORE TROUBLE.HAD TO SEND IT BACK FOR REPAIRS. SILICONE FIXED IT. NO MORE REPAIRS NEEDED.
