Hi! I'm a new member to this. I bought my Quatro in April and not finding much yet.
Sometimes I get a good sounding target and yet if I swing over it again, its gone.
Also the ground is so hard right now (no rain for awhile) that if it shows 12 in deep
I can't dig. Sometimes I dig the hole and then run the detector over it and its gone
so I think its in the dirt heap but cant find that either. But I always look forward to
my next outing, I guess its the thrill of the hunt! Thanks for listening

Maybe you had a coin in the bottom of the hole and turned it on it's end when you dug. It could be deep enough you don't read it now. Maybe you should angle the coil in different directions around when that happens. I don't have a Quatro, but do want one or one of the other minelabs.I've just got an older Whites Sprectrum. i've had this happen to me before, recently while at a buried club coin hunt. Another MDer saw me and told me what had happened, and he was right. There was a merc in there, lol

One of the things I learned when i had my Quattro was when you get a good tone of a good target was to see where the target was, then lift the coil so the threshold resets itself and go back over that area. If it is gone or a different tone I walk away, but if it is still there I will be digging. I feel this has to do with the slow recovery speed as a good target will carry over to iron and trash, but will also cause the Quattro to lock on to a good target too.
Like I say just make sure it is a good target before you dig by raising the coil so the threshold reset and go back over the area so the target is the first thing it sees.

Rick's advice is great and really helped me get over those first few hunts with my Quattro.

My other bit of advice is that if the Quattro says something is under the ground, it's there somewhere. Early on I was digging empty holes but quickly discovered that this was often due to a large object (like a piece of a can) buried deep. If you are fairly new to detecting you will be amazed how difficult it is sometimes to spot a coin in the soil, especially if it has been there for a while. You also have to listen and sweep over the target several times. If you get a consistent position and ID then that's usually the sign of a good target. Occasionally, if you sweep to fast, you will get a good ID from a piece of trash or iron. But when you slowly sweep back over you get a consistent trash ID.

Pinpoint mode also gives you important information about the target size. Coins usually produce a sharp peak in pinpoint mode where all the bars are filled only over a tiny area. Remember to always move the coil off the target before entering pinpoint mode.

Wow, thank you all for the great info. I cant wait to go out tomorrow and see what I can find. One thing with the Quatro is the "recovery time" that many of you refer to.
Whats up with that? I have a feeling it has something to do with the many frequencies?
Anyways my old detector is a white's 1990 Eagle and with a single frequency it seemed
easier to understand but I must of been missing allot of targets. Also with the Quatro
it reads deep targets and often I dig this huge hole and never do find the target.
Does anybody use sifters or something to throw the dirt into? More than once Iv felt
that Iv lost a target in all that hard (Nevada) dirt when dirty and tired I just give up and
move on. I always look forward to the next time though, no matter what I find!. Thanks, again

Uniprobe come with headphones and is the deepest of all the probes... They also make a model without headphones called the Pocket Uniprobe.
The Vibra Probe is excelent too... But not as deep as he Uniprobe.
A Probe will help you find those lost targets
Practice your pinpointing... What I did when I had my Explorer was center over the target... wiggle the coil left to right in shorts swiings the move the coil towards you until the sound stopped... then it was right under the sticker om the front of the coil. Practice that with a dime on the ground... Then tap a coin to the underside of a piece of cardboard and try it again. Practice until you hit the dime when you poke thru the first time.
another methed to find the item after digging your hole is to dig until you lose the signal in the hole... and get it in the pile. Then lay down the machine and pick up handfulls of dirt and scan them over the coil... Make sure you don't have any jewelry on or a watch. scan a handfull at a time unitl you get a beep... then you found it in your hand.
