STLL tryin to learn to snipe!!!!!

Went to the old relaible school yard....had the sniper on
the GTI....for a test

marked off a 4 x 4 ft grid with golf tees.........
with the sniper 3 pennies a lot of short
Blips, some soild bell tones but nothing
great came up..
Switched to the std coil same spot
7 pennies 2 nickles and a quarter
and not one :pulltab:

I know imaging makes a difference but i didnt think
it was that much of one... Or is it ME????? :sadwalk:

Maybe im using the sniper where i shouldnt... I could use it
it tite areas or around and under playground stuff... and save the
std coil for all the other areas OR is it just the coils
size differences???? :unsure:

as always any advise info critiscms etc are welcome

But be GENTLE with the ctiticsms :rofl:

Remember you only have 4.5 inches to play with and you have to cover much more ground with the Sniper. It takes patience and perseverance. When you scan you'll have to practically scan back over the same spot to get ample coverage. Three or four inches down the signal ain't covering very much ground - just an inch or so. Scan in a real tight oval so that you are covering part of your last pass with the next one.. You can't scan then move the coil several inches ahead. If you do you'll miss a ton of real estate. Here's a rough scetch.

:usaflag:Man oh man....so so many stories about the sniper coil....both good and bad. I'd say it's about 60-40. I've been bucking up to buy one and now I'm having second thoughts. I do pretty well with my stock 6" X 9"....lots of pennies but a little of everything else too. And I finally found an earring today..it was a crappy silver-plated hoop..but still jewelry. Somebody please fill my head with happy thoughts about the Sniper coil...I want one but do I really need it? Is this a case of "If it 'aint broke, don't fix it"??
 
The happiest weeks I've had with the Ace began at Christmas when my sniper coil arrived. I, like Bill said, had to redo my search walk as now I have to scan 2-3 times before I take a step. I have paid for the coil in COINS alone since I got it-not to mention the 4 gold rings. It takes a lot of patience and I hardly use it in the wide open, football field, soccer field scenario where about 200-300 yards have to be covered. I may have to get another Ace for the big fields.:rofl:
 
I do not use a Garrett MD (I do use the Pro Pointer). I would thine the your sniper would be similar to my 6" DD coil and I have found as much with it as my other coils. I have gone over the same ground as with my bigger coils and find more coins that were masked (I think). Boy that little coil is a great tool to have in the bag.

If (when) I had a Garrett, I certaintly would have one of the bitty little coils. I know over in Xterra land some of the guys don't use the little coils but there also a bunch who swear by them.

Takes time to cover ground, and I use mine mainly for trashy areas.

I don't use a garretts detector, but I do use a small coil when i get into a trashy area and it does work. First day I took my small coil out I found 4 indian head pennies and an old mercury dime in an area me and two other buddies had hunted several times with stock coils. I would not have believed those coins could have been missed until i saw it for myself. get the small coil, you won't be sorry.

:usaflag:I don't recall using the word "complain" in my last post, but I see where you are coming from. I'm sure I will have loads of questions about detecting for years to come. I've never heard terrible comments about the Sniper....just lots of questions. It's obvious that a person has to change their approach to their detector when changing up coils. Happy Hunting !!
 
- Ive ever used is White Blue Max 600/Black 5.3 (one and the same). They just seemed to hit the magic formula with that one, that elusive realm between ground coverage and pin point focus.

The Garrett 4.5" sniper is a bit of a widget and I can kinda get where you are coming from. It seems not to do what is asked of it, at first useage. It is a tad too small, IMHO. BUT once I stuck with it, I began to see things popping up that not only surprised, but pleased me.

In places where the larger coil would find multiple trash targets beneath, the sniper would ferret out a coin or two that were flatly overlooked. It did this at 5-6" depths. I did note that the depth reading on the detector was firmly locked at 1-2", making that feature unreliable. This has been noted by others. On the plus side, TID remained spot on, along with the belltone.

Id like to see a DD or elliptical sniper still made for the GTP 1350 and its ilk, as the ground coverage would be better. There was one long ago in the Garrett lineup, but no more.

THese small coils are both tiresome to use over large areas and sometimes hard to get used to. Give it a month, but only use it in the most congested areas.
 
60/40? I've hardly heard anything bad about the sniper, except maybe that it doesn't cover a whole lot of
ground. But of the ones that use it, I'd say the satisfaction ratio I've seen would be more like 95/5 pro sniper.. :/
No joke.. I've hardly read of anyone that wished they hadn't bought it after using it in a trashy area.
Myself, I consider it almost a "must have" coil if you run through trash or busy areas quite a bit.
Well.. Maybe not a must have, but it can sure speed things up when you have multi targets overlapping
each other. With the big coils, pinpointing in such busy areas can be a bit tedious. With the sniper, it's
pop, pop, pop, one after another. Also, it's quite handy on the Ace 150 where you don't have a pinpoint mode.

But if you don't detect busy areas like that much, it would be worth less to the average user.
I have all three coils for the ace, and I use them all. Just depends what/where I'm hunting. And I still use
the stock coil quite a bit.. It's a good medium size coil and handy in areas that are too tight for the 9x12.
IE: brushy areas, etc..
Of the three coils for the ace machines, I think the sniper is the most "fun" coil to use. It's super light, small,
and still hits to at least 5 inches. :super: Don't regret buying it a bit.

No problem. I know it can be hard to decide when one has never used a certain coil.
But it's a super easy coil to use. The easiest of the three Ace coils because it's so simple
to pinpoint in busy areas. If one was not finding stuff with it, most likely there is no stuff
at that location to find.. Which does happen. Not every site is going to be loaded with goodies.
This can happen even at some old home sites. Back in the day, coins were worth a lot more
than they are these days. So people tended to lose less of them unless they were just careless.
This is why every once in a while you will hear of a hunter searching a 150 year old site and
funding only junk. The owners through the years were as tight as I am, and didn't lose much $$$... :rofl:
Also, it's a theory of mine that the houses that had lots of children running around are more likely
to have coins than say a house that held just adults that rarely ventured out into the yard.
In Oldranger's case, I think there just wasn't much to find at that location he was at, rather than
actually learning the coil.. The little coils are pretty much plug n play..
 
:usaflag:oldranger...I know you were'nt, I was just ribbing you a bit ...it's all good. I was wondering what your username means? Were you a park ranger at one time or does it have to do with your location? We live just north of what they call the "Iron Range"..and some folks call themselves "rangers".
 
Hey, I had my Ace for over 3 years and then one day David (haven't heard much from him lately because of his work schedule) told about how he found a gold ring next to a metal pole and how he tilted the coil slightly away from the pole to get nearer it, and my mind just snapped.(No wise cracks, please) I right then and there decided to get one and found over $5 on my first use in a small area right in front of a school entrance, and down the edges of the sidewalk. I also liked the fact that I didn't use the pinpoint button because it wasn't necessary anymore. All of a sudden ALL of the trash spots I had mostly ignored became wide open. So I understand the hesitation-It took me a long time, also. The nice thing about it is that all of a sudden I had NEW hunting sites that I had skimmed over or ignored. Pretty soon the schools will fill back up and I will use another good detector I have with the 8" coil-but the sniper coil STAYS.

hence the OLD and Ranger is what I Did in the
Army in Viet Nam..LRRP Long Range Recon Patrol

Only 4700 of us did that job in the 10 yrs
we were there.. Im kinda proud of that

Just be sure to take your regular coil, larger coil and the sniper coil with you every time. Sometimes I get lazy and just grab the detector and go out only to find that I could have either used the larger or the sniper and didn't have it with me. I just started leaving the 2 extra coils in my car along with a variety of digging tools. That way, I always have the right tool or coil. Don't forget snacks and drinks. Nothing worse than being in an area with good finds and getting the shakes cause your hungry or wanting something to drink. If your out and away from everyone, don't forget the toilet paper. The jobs not finished till the paperwork is done.

Cristasphoto...you took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you is not enough...Oldranger..Long-range recon does not sound like it was the least bit enjoyable. My uncle was in Vietnam...and he said that he will never forget the "swamp" smell.
