Stock & 10.5DD Coil Weights......

Ok, lets settle this thing about the 10.5DD coils being too heavy to use much. I took and weighed both the stock 9" and the 10.5DD coils, coil covers AND the lower rod. I think just because the 10.5 looks bigger, people believe that it is heavy.

Stock 9" Coil Weighs 20 1/8 ounces

10.5 DD Coil Weighs 20 3/4 ounces

I used a industrial grade scale, not a postal scale, so it is alot more accurate...............Mark

10.5 DD Coil. But at the end of the day if you switch back from the 15 to the 10.5 it is very noticible!

Mark,
Thanks for the info. Weight is a big concern for me. I'll be choosing another coil for my new 705 soon(have the 10x5). Eventually I will probably have 3 or more.
5/8 oz difference? If that all it is I could go for the 10.5. I thought it would be more.

I'm just going to assume other xTerra owners might be under the same impression.
Could we compile a list or make sticky of the various xTerra coil weights? Or is there a listing of such at Mine Lab?

I agree, there isn't much difference in total weight. But for me, it is more a balance issue rather than actual weight. I think if Minelab had moved the mounting tabs an inch or so forward, toward the center of the coil, it would have improved the balance and made a great coil even better. But, it is what it is...... a great coil that hunts very deep! Thanks for your info Mark. JMHO HH Randy

Yea Randy if the coil ears were centered, it would be better. I have tried hunting with the coil mounted backwards as others have done and I really could not see a difference. Mark

I think it just feels heavy because of the way it is balanced. Thanks for the info. I would have bet it weight more than that.

Kurt

Mark and Randy,
So in your opinion, does going with a straight rod make up for the balance issue?

On the larger DD coils, the location where the rod connects to the coil puts more of the coil weight in front of the rod. To me, this makes it more "nose heavy" than the concentric coils. A straight rod doens't make the coil lighter weight. But by changing the angle of leverage (the rod), it changes the "fulcrum",changing the balance and allows me to manuver the coil more precisely. Even by simply rotating the stock S rod 180 degrees, (down instead of up) you can make some difference in the balance. Some folks like it and others don't. Simply a matter of personal preference. You said it better than I could explain it Randy!!!!!!!!
