I dug an odd button at my brother's farm this past Sunday. Its about the size of a penny but a bit thicker and made of metal, though I'm unsure just what type of metal. It rang up as a nickel (18-20) on the MXT which is why I dug it. Later after cleaning it up a bit I rechecked the VDI and found it would only ring up between 10 and 14. The design is a wreath with what appears to be a bow at the top. The center device looks like it could be a fruit or a flower or maybe an acorn - not sure. Between this and the wreath are fine rays. The back is flat. I read in a couple places that many old buttons are made of pewter and if so they will mark a piece of paper like a pencil but I tried it and it made no mark. The metal has no obvious corrosion, but if you look at the edge it looks like its coming apart into very thin layers like pastry crust. Has anybody seen one like this before and can you shed come light on what its made of and maybe how old it is? It may not mean anything but I found it in the same spot as a coin spill that dated to around 1935/6.
