Stumbled Upon This

While cleaning my shower this week I noticed the shower curtain rod is aluminum. It's the type that is two pieces that you expand to fit and locked in place with a twist. Further investigation revealed that the diameter of the smaller of the two pieces is the same as the shaft on my excal. This could be a source of tubing for those wanting a short shaft for diving or chest mounting. I believe they come in a variety of colors also should be cheap at flea markets, Wall-mart, etc. Check it out:beers:

I have an aftermarket fibreglass upper shaft for my GP 3000 that keeps as much metal as possible away from the coil to optimise sensitivity. I think this same shaft fits on the Sovereign GT, Eureka Gold, and Musketeer Advantage straight shaft configurations. So wouldn't it make sense to try to get a fibreglass or plastic upper shaft for an Excalibur??

Someone should come up with homemade plans to make fibreglass or plastic upper shafts for different models of straight shaft configurations. :nerd: Could be built at home with common sense, measuring, drill, and other tools. Any feedback or further ideas on this??

wouldn't metal upset your detector .......?

Correct, I should clarify. Still use the lower minelab fiberglass rod . Use the scrounged aluminum tubing for the top section or to fabricate a chest mount.

Most hardware stores Ive been in have aluminum tube stock also in varying lengths, just take your lower rod in with you and see what fits.

The handgrip can be had at most bike shops, its called a bar end and the rest is just holes you drill yourself, for the lower rod push pin and armcuff I mean.

Thanks, Minelab has a bolt on hand grip and arm rest for their straight shaft. I would rather look for plastic or Fibreglass tube stock for making a homemade upper shaft and give that a try.

Built my own straight shaft , from the tubing from small boat canvas top supports ...
Arm cuff , out of pvc pipe ( cut a ring st. through 4" in width and then cut above 1/2 way horizonatley))
cover inside with a foam can cover cut snd siliconed to fit inside....and some webbing strap cut and
siliconed to outside...of pvc, for upper arm support
Handle out of pvc also ... wrapped in a thin couzie can holder..................
>> cut and screw to balance,, The 2 that i have are long and I can cover a lot of beach,,,
with my Sov. and S-12 coil.....2 hrs. for a st. shaft for sov or your detector*** and about
$ 2---3.00 is worth it....I went to a local plumber and got scrap pvc ....free.....
