Stupid and getting worse daily.....

Ok I am going to snivel and whine and all, I know.....

I have had AMAZING finds with my Deus.

Yesterday a few of us was detecting a lot and there was tons of silver and tokens found, by everyone, except me, I had 4 good signals and they was all clad coins, not even a wheat.....I was running a good program but did switch around, IDK for some reason I was just stupid and out of it....

one guy had a 3030 (owned it 6 weeks now) and smoked us all....Man if I was not soooo in love with my Deus I would be looking to swap.

I think I have done so much overthinking and messing with my programs that I have dummed up...

Now my wife will say I been dumb all my life but that aside, what about over doing settings and such?"

Jim
PS Deus got me a gold coin so I am NOT that bad off....lol

I think you will have great days and then a few bad with the Deus. Can't be the winner every day I guess. But hey, his shoulder hurts from swinging that CTX I bet!!!!

Hey Jim----You're "A ok"--I enjoy your posts!------We all have our "off" days--ask me, I'm livin proof!-----If you're concerned about dumming the Deus up with over doing settings---do a re-set & you're off & running again.---I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.;)------As far as those two detectors (CTX & Deus)----my Deus finds me things my CTX doesn't and vice versa---guess it all comes out in the wash.--------Del

Dear Jim
I'm dumb and getting dumber every day too But if you don't get it under the coil it just doesn't go beep. Not your fault. Some days just aren't ours.

Jim ,

Was this a seeded hunt? There's someone who posted a very sharp "seeded hunt" program awhile back using 18 khz and he did well with it. If you know EXACTLY what you are hunting in a seeded hunt - the Deus should give you an advantage if you set it up accordingly.

And...You found a gold coin! That's one of the most coveted finds worldwide next to a JAR of gold coins!!! Don't feel bad or "skunked" because a few silvers didn't come your way - you will always have the advantage in irony sites!!!

The only thing I have to add to all these great comments is group hunting is far different from the relaxed, solo, slow hunts where we can afford to take as much time as we like before we run out of ground to hunt at the site. In a group hunt, the real estate can be crowded and disappear fast. As such, it's important to cover ground faster than you normally would to give you the edge. And since you're armed with the Deus--the fastest machine in town, it might be advisable to avoid iffy targets at first and just keep moving until you hear the obvious sweet sound you're looking for. I'm simply saying give yourself an edge. At your site if the desirable targets are silver, I, myself would be hunting in 12K with the 11X13 you have (for faster coverage) and listen for high-toned and not too shallow targets--although not silver, you can also dig those tokens at depth--listen for the roundness, skip the xy screen unless you have to use it, and consider depth before you dig. Depending on the size of the lot, sample more than one area in a short time to see if you can locate the hotspot. I don't know what your site conditions were, but regardless, after a few digs, you'll get a sense of the site conditions, what depth the silver would be, how much iron and trash, etc.; you know the drill as well as anyone here. Once you have a sense of the site, you can decide on the right coil, discrimination, etc.

In your situation, I advocate 12K in full tones because it'll hit the low and high conductors well (as you well know), but also enables you to flip over to 4K for bottlecap and other iron rejection and conductive coin confirmation. 12K really sings on US silver and in most cases less prone to EMI and Garrett Propointer interference. Yours was a competition hunt of sorts, consequently you don't need to hear every tiny bit of metal in the ground on your first pass; therefore your discrimination setting doesn't need to be low; I would imagine 6-10 would be plenty good. If you don't want to waste your time listening for and digging junk, notch out the lower end and extreme high end of the spectrum. Also, turn off Iron Volume--it sounds as if you wouldn't need it at that hunt. Most often Reactivity of 2 works really well and gets a lot of depth. Unless you're in a lot of trash, there's no need to go to 3 on your first pass. Silencer at -1 or 0 unless the site demands more...but you can hear junk and keep moving rather than sacrifice sound quality with increased silencer. I've read time and again how TX doesn't give you much more depth. In fact using TX-1 doesn't make you lose much depth either, and it'll allow the Deus to do its job quickly and precisely without the annoyance of return signals confusing the Deus because you put too much power into the ground. With React 2, Silencer -1 or 0, TX-1 in 12K you should be able to easily hit a silver dime in average soil/trash/iron conditions at 6-8 or more inches. Make sure you can hear it...ensure headphone volume is up and increase Audio Response if you're having trouble hearing the deep tones. That's how I would proceed, but you know your site better than anyone. I've been using the Deus 3-4 times a week since May and it took awhile, but I settled on a program that just feels right to me for the soil, iron and trash conditions around here. It allows me to move quickly, listen for the good stuff, check for the bad in a different/adjacent frequency and make a dig/no dig decision. I can then go back over the site again with a faster program and be a little more thorough.

Like CZ said, you're the Studmaster General of finds this year, so don't take a bad day too hard--we all have them! Good luck next time!

Been in daily intense learning curve Deus hunts and am feeling quite comfortable with my settings and hunting a lot TX1 and other settings to fit my site. beepsilver is spot on but I'd like to add that at times we just don't get the coil over good targets. Been there done that.

You may have GB wrong I would go manual hold the machine up to your waist then turn on and then put speaker on or off and then GB

I tend to just keep it simple rather than keep changing all the settings, all i use is Deus Fast,12Khz,2 tone and that is all i use on all my roman, saxon and celtic sites infact every location that i go on and i do have a wide spectrum of permission over here in the UK.

Its a quality detector and the weight aspect was the main reason i added it to my arsenal, although i have the controller i never use it,infact it stays in my truck the main reason its a 'tone' machine and when using the WS5 headphones you can hear all those deep down feint small targets,

At the end of the day a detector is just basically a plastic item with a few chips inside,it makes no odds how much a detector costs it wont find you any more, its the skill of the 'detectorists' and that 12'' of space between your headphones that makes all the differance and of course you have to walk over it,if its not under your coil you wont find it.

I have been on a few digs where the Deus found everything and other digs where Minelabs found everything , and I got nothing.

CZ not a seeded hunt, just a large lot....

Beep your dead on, which I know, for whatever reason, I just could not get my head to settle down and thus my fingers changing settings, which I do adjust on some hunts for conditions, but this day I had my head up my rear and was finger fu@kin the settings.....and thus no matter what, I was dead. LOL maybe I needed this to ground me again and to realize I do not know the Deus like I should....Which is good.

I also think as my friend found a silver and another I was building pressure on myself and thus changed more.

All good posts/comments hear, thanks for them all.....

What amazes me is how I can find a coin of a lifetime (Half Eagle) and just a month or so later be so dang P.O'd about being bet out on some silvers....LOL I am a lil competitive maybe, or as I said, dumb as a rock.

All this being said, I sure did enjoy being out with friends and this week I am going back tot hat dang lot and cleaning it out!

Thanks to all,

Jim

I've had a CTX 3030 for a year and a half and I have a ton of hours on it. Most of the time I chose the Deus over it.

Only when targets are deep over 10'' I'll choose the ctx. I'll also chose it in an area trashed with non-ferrous items and I'm trying to pick out coins. It's better than the Deus at identifying coins because of the target trace. Sometimes it wont even pick up a coin in high trash that the deus will though.

But 80% of the time I'm swinging the Deus, you shouldn't get discouraged.

I went back, went to my "silver" program and did alright, especially since so much was cleaned out last time (Not to mention this place had a ton of others on it thru the ears)....Got some real nice pieces and another Barber dime (1905),

I think I am still stupid lol but now I am stupid and finding goodies again.....

Jim

As the late philosopher F Gump once said "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know, what yur gonna git".
Some days a gold coin, others nuthin.

Just keep diggin.

Waiting for next Spring, Just 103-days 16-hours 30-min.

FBS machines destroy the Deus in North American coin shooting sessions. The Deus was made to shine in the iron

That's why I kept my ETrac and had to save up for a while before I bought the Deus. I didn't want both, I needed both. The right tools for the right spot....

I would agree they are easier for someone who doesn't understand the Deus, but "destroy"? No way!. The E-Trac is a much simpler deep coin machine but the Deus is just as deep and handles iron better. We won't even mention gold.

I love the Deus for coin hunting it's all about understand what the machine is telling you and the deeper the coin is the more you have to understand how the machine works. I think with the new software updates this machine can out grow a lot of units on the market now..
