Stupid Computer

Active member
I've been elbow deep into my 3 year old Dell computer trying to get her fired up. This is my dedicated work machine. Bad news is that the Motherboard is fried. Good news is all my files are safe. I have a new board being delivered tomorrow, so hopefully I won't lose too much more work.

Sandtick,
May I make a suggestion (if you have not done so)
Think of investing into a USB flash / jump drive. Make a copy of all your important files onto this drive and store in someplace safe. If worst case scenario happens (hard drive bites the dust) you will have peace of mind and rest a little easier knowing all the important stuff is backed up. I learned the hard way several years back. (I lost a lot of work) Now, I have three USB flash drives and a 100GB travelstar laptop hard drive that I converted to USB that all my data is backed up on. I bought the adapter on the famous auction block for a few bucks (called USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE combo adapter) and it plugs right into (in my case) the IDE end of the little hard drive. Plus if you have to format your computer, it is a snap to reload everything back on after the format. - Jim

Thanks for the suggestion Jim,
I do have a backup drive that was supposed to copy any files that were changed nightly. For some reason it has not copied any of my files for the past week. I also do monthly backups. Luckily it's the motherboard and should not have corrupted any of my info on the hard drive. I do have a couple of extra hard drives that I can convert like you did. This just teaches me to be more prepare.

Just keep repeating "Technology makes our lives better" over and over again......

I spend a lot of time in CAD/CAM and sometimes I still like my 100 year old hand tools better!

I hate it when that happens! Just replaced the hard-drive on my laptop a couple months ago and had the repair guy put Windows 7 on the rig rather than replace it with Windows Vista, which never did work right.

Don't even get me started with windows Vista. It has been a problem child since day one. Next on my list is Windows 7.

Sailorman, I work in CAD all the time. Basically AutoCad. I do still have all my hand drafting equipment but not sure I remember how to use them. I also dabble in CNC stuff. I own a poor man's CNC machine, a Shopbot. I'm planning to make some bedroom furniture for my parents soon and may hit you up for some finishing lessons.

Don't knock that Shopbot. My modified PRT Alpha (Machine #2) with a 5HP Spindle competes for parts contracts with big iron and wins a lot of contracts, although these days we're all starving. I have produced over 750,000 parts from it. It's a 5' by 12'. Been through 4 spindles and two freq drives. Still running strong.

Sure I'd like a DMS but not in this economy. Right now I don't even know if we'll still be in business in three months.....

Glad all is back in order
