Stupid question

New member
Just got an older model GPS To aid me in my MDing
Can any one tell me why the numbers I get to navigate
are different than my GPS wants
and the W & N are on different ends??????????

Example:::::::::::::::::

My research numbers........

111111N
1111111W

GPS wants...........

N 11 11 111
W 111 11 111

I'm missing some numbers here?????

HH TIM

I understand the Degrees, minutes, $ seconds
but how do I change the numbers to make my GPS happy??????

Looks like your receiver is set to display co-ordinates in UTM format. This is format that I like but it's of no / little use if your maps don't have UTM grid or co-ordinates that you got from somebody are Latitude / Longitude.
I don't know hat receiver you do have but somewhere, in the menu / settings, you should be able to change the format to latitude / longitude and have your choice of degrees / minutes / seconds or degrees / minutes.decimalminutes or degrees.decimal degrees.
Another thing you need to know / set is the datum.
You may want to read through couple posts in the "old forum".

Thanks Andy for your time:thumbup
I Have a Garmin GPS 38
I was a gift from a friend
so I'll take it
I don't find any options in the menu,
or the manuel to change these settings
I believe the datum is correct

WGS 84

Any help would be appreciated

If you want to stay on my good side, please, don't call me "Andy" :yikes

To change co-ordinate format see manual page 47
The manual? Well, here http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GPS38_OwnersManual.pdf

My fathers name was Andrew also
Will never happen again
Thanks for the info
But I still can't see how the 6 North numbers
and the 7 West numbers, with the N&W at the end of the numbers
and the GPS wants 7 North numbers
and 8 West nunmbers, with the N&W at the begining
Sorry, I'm obviously new to this
all the optioins it gives me wants more numbers
than I have to input???
Hope this makes sence

Thankss

No offence taken.

I just read your first post again and realized that I my first advice was in-accurate.
IF your researched co-ordinates are in the format shown below (note, in my "translation" d=degree, m=minute, s=seconds) :

111111N
1111111W

Than they are not UTM.
I suspect that there should be a decimal point in there and than, your reserch numbers could actually be:

11.1111N (dd.dddd)
111.1111W (ddd.dddd)
or, maybe there are some missing spaces so the numbers are:
11 11 11N (dd mm ss)
111 11 11W (ddd mm ss)
or there is a space and a decimal point missing and the numbers are:
11 11.11N (dd mm.mm)
111 11.11W (ddd mm.mm)

It does not matter if the N/W are shown after or before numbers. They are still simply indication of North and West.

There is only one thing I can be reasonably sure of: the first 2 digits of the North co-ordinates and 3 digits of the West co-ordinates stand for degrees. The rest is a guessing game unless you can give me more info.
I do understand that you may not want to give here the actual co-ordinates you researched but, you may take a chance and email them to me (I don

Andrew, I appreciate your time and effort in helping out the helpless:shrug
Thank you:thumbup
When I change my format on my GPS
the is more blank spaces it wants filled up
than numbers I have
No matter what format I try
It wants 7 numbers for North
And 8 numbers for South
I only have 6 numbers for North
and 7 numbers for south
What do I do with the empty space?????????

Thansks

I will not know untill we know for sure what format your data is in and which specific format you set the receiver to.
Look at the numbers in the co-ordinates you have and answer the questions from my last post and I may be able to solve the mistery.

For the curious ones; Mistery solved over emails. The format was ddmmss the original data simply lacked spaces / unit designations.
