sunray probe installation

I'm setting up a sunray probe for my new e-trac. Is the coil cable still supposed to run inside the lower rod, or do I need to pull the out and run it around the outside of the lower rod? Is running it outside an issue?

also, does pinpointing with the sunray probe work better when set to "sizing" ?

Yes the wire hangs outside now and no problem with it. Kinda makes changing coils a breeze! As for pinpointing, I only use sizing and the Sun ray works very well that way IMO.

I don't like the coil wire on the outside so I got a Dremel tool and cut a slot for the plug to slide out and hook into the switch box. It wasn't hard and it doesn't look unsightly. It had to make the shaft weaker than original but practically, unless you are going to pole vault with it, it's functional stregth is the same as if the slot were not cut. If you buy a new coil with an extra lower shaft, you just slide the connector up inside like you would normally and I use a piece of dental floss to loop over the connector to pull it through the slot I cut. I provided pictures of that mod some months ago. Might want to search and look at it.
I use the pinpoint mode on the probe when I want lots of help on a elusive target. It sped things up as I was learning the quarks of a DD coil and pinpointing. Jim

can you post a picture of your set up?

Hello Texastreasures, Here is a pic of the way that I cut the slot in the upper shaft. I got the idea from Grumpy and I'm glad I did it. I have two sunray probes and I've cut them both. Changing coils is a breeze. I bent me a metal rod for the hook and a handle on it. I have experience no problems with any weakness with the shaft. HH EddieB

Wondering what you mean by "I bent me a metal rod for the hook and a handle on it." ?
You lost me there, what is the purpose of the metal hook. I am not sure I see it's application in the picture.

I made a hook on a small diameter metal rod to reach into the hole of the shaft to hook the connector just under the nut of the connector to pull the coil connector and cable out of the shaft. I'm sorry I did not complete the purpose of the metal hook. I hope this helps. HH EddieB

I use dental floss and tie it onto the connector base and the drop my floss down the rod and pul it through. Then I roll the floss into a ball and push it into the tube and locked it down.

Now I have the Rest of The Story.
Thanks.
