Sunray X-12 Bryces field test:

Frank in NH

Active member
Just read field test in Western& Eastern great test and well written. Makes me glad i bought this coil. WTG Bryce!

I too enjoyed the article, but I do have a question. Would the X-5 coil have found more targets due to better target separation OR the X-12 due to greater depth? Bottom line, it's the operator with good equipment and lots of experience that finds the goodies. I know that I need more time in the field to gain that experience (E-Trac with X-5, Minelab 8" coil, and the stock coil).

Craig in SE Idaho

Craig...if you take the Sunray X-5 to a site with only moderate trash and where the coins are all in the 9" to 11" depth range...odds are you won't find much.

Likewise if you take the 12" Sunray to a site where the trash density is extreme and the coins are all in the 4" to 7" range...you probably won't find much.

That's what makes aftermarket coils an invaluable tool to find coins missed by others. Once you spend some time on different coils...you will begin to see where each coil shines...and where it doesn't.

With the machine and coil selection you stated you have...you'll do fine friend.

Like you said...a little more time on the equipment you have...and it will begin to click.

I'll look forward to your posts as you learn the machine...good luck:thumbup:

Hi Frank.

I appreciate your kind words about the field test article.

I tried to do the best I could before the cold weather took over...so I'm glad you feel it turned out well.

I haven't received the magazine yet...just like last time...I was probably the last person to receive it in the mail.

As for settings...no secret...and not really any changes from what I. always run.

That is the key for me to be able to tell what coil works for me at different sites...and more importantly WHY.

If I made a bunch of settings changes each time I put on a coil...I wouldn't know whether to attribute the success...or failure if the case may be...to the coil...or the settings changes.

I have a rock solid combination of settings I use for all sites and all coils...no matter what the conditions at each site are.

This has worked very well for me and has allowed me to train my ears for a particular sound to listen for.

For example...a lot of people feel you should use fast ON when hunting in trash...and they may be right...the manual even says so.

Me however...I feel fast ON clips the signal short...and I don't like that.

I leave both fast and deep OFF..and always have since I found the group of settings that started producing more seated coins for me...and even 2 bust coins.

The key for success to finding coins in the iron is training your ears to listen for a particular souned which is ever so slightly different from iron falsing.

It doesn't always work...trust me:biggrin:...but it has definitely improved my success in iron.

The ONLY setting I ever change when hunting in iron is the sensitivity. Sometimes I will switch to semi auto 26 instead of manual..if it becomes too hard to tell falsing from coin chirps.

If the coil "handles" iron well...then I'll run manual..but if I need to...I'll run old faithful semi auto 26.

Sure there are a lot of settings to tinker with and they might actually improve what some people find at different sites.

Me personally though....NOT making changes is what has helped me drill the "sweet" sound in my head.

Each little setting change can effect what I hear...and I don't like that.

I truthfully feel the secret to success in iron is NOT what settings a person uses...but more importanty what they have trained their ears to listen for...and how the coil they choose performs over the iron. The X-12 just simply performed for me. Not sure it''s anything I did... but AM sure it's just simply an excellent coil for me.

That's as honest as I can be.

Bryce,

I also enjoyed the review and am considering buying an X-12. One question: how well does it handle mineralized ground? Does it behave like a D2 to penetrate the harsher dirt? Thanks for all your great insight and helping me avoid a blind purchase.

PS -- I agree with your comment about settings!

David

I was very excited to read the article myself. I think you have found your nitch in field testing Bryce. I had used the X-12 exclusively with the SE but when I got the E-Trac I got the 10X12 SEF and have liked it but after reading the article it reminded me of how much I love the X-12 so I am taking it off my SE and putting it on the Trac. Keep em coming Bryce ,very easy to read article and gets right to the good stuff.:clapping:

Thanks Travis...I appreciate it.

I go back and forth betwen the 12" Sunray and the 10 x 12 SEF for the most part.

It's a no lose situation with EITHER of those 2 coils:thumbup:

Flip a coin....you WIN either way:clapping:

Take care

Hi David.

It is a double D coil and it handled the mineralization quite well for me at the 3 test sites.

That does not mean that it will do the same for you at your sites...but the X-12 is a great coil...seriously.

It is hands down my favorite round coil.

I appreciate your kind words about my review...but don't buy the X-12 based on my review alone. Check with others who have used it and I'm sure you will find the vast majority loved it.

It has had a great reputation for many years...and was a privilege to field test. I only wish I would have gotten the opportunity sooner:)

Bryce did you try this coil at an ocean beach? I tried two of them and they were very noisy and I couldnt get them to quiet down. I own the X8 and its a great one and tried the X5 and that was good also. I loved the S12 on my Sov but the X12 I had problems with. Ive put off ordering up W&E treasures mag for some time so I guess Im gonna have to get it to read your write up. Any chance you can post what settings you used at the beach if you used it there?

Thanks much,
Neil

Were you able to hunt with sensitivity as high on the X-12 as you are when you use the SEF 10x12.
I know from hunting with you that you like how stable the sef is at higher levels.
Did the same hold true for the X-12? How does this coil rank for you on your favorites list compared to your other coils?
Sorry for all the questions but just curious.
Later...Kennon

Kennon it was very stable for me at manual 26 which is as high as I ever go on coils unless they are much smaller.

Some smaller coils I run semi auto 32 but manual 26 is as hot as I run stock or bigger coils so the answer is definitely yes.

I have had a few pm's about what it does on the beach...but I have never hunted a beach so I can't answer that one.

It has definitely become one of my favorite coils in a short time. I didn't even start using it until December...but it has definitely proven itself to me in that short time frame.

It's an excellent coil buddy...and gives a very loud signal over deep coins for me.

You know me and have hunted with me...so you know I'm a straight shooter. I have no problem recomending it to you.

So, you know someone has to ask.... by round coil, do you mean including the pro coil? It is well, round? If so (again someone was going to ask) why?

Also enjoyed reading your article brother! Strange we all get to look at it in the magazine before you? Thank you for taking the time to test and write about it!

I do indeed mean including the pro coil:cool:

Why??...

1) the 12" Sunray handles iron better for me.

2) it is more stable for me.

3) it gives a louder, crisper sound over deep coins for me.

I could go on:)..but I am by no means trying to slam the pro coil. it is an EXCELLENT coil... has found me a ton of stuff...and has worked wonders for many hunters.

It is light...deep...and a ton of people love it.

Me however...I prefer the Sunray....just as honest as I can be.
