Surfmaster PI PRO: water turbolence and false signals

Hello,
I'm starting to build up some experience with the surfmaster PI pro. It is a great detector in my opinion but , having read some questions in the past about apparent erratic detector response in the water, I have to note that the PI PRO becomes APPARENTLY erratic in presence of water turbolence (do not confuse this with an effect known as "waving" due to waves passing over the head).
There are areas in the water where, even in absence of waves, there is consistent water turbolence that , in my opinion, causes a fast local change in water condutivity, hence a real "signal" for the Surfmaster.
I might be wrong, but that is my experience...

You can try to reduce the gain setting somewhat, sweep slower, and be sure to keep the coil flat to the ground the best you can. It may help <img src="/metal/html/shrug.gif" border=0 width=37 height=15 alt=":shrug">

Yes it helps indeed but it takes some experience too to dicriminate between good and false signals in the headphones. I think beginners will be disoriented by this beaviour.. So my message is DON'T panic <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> it's a good detector!

Hi Luca,
Since seawater is an electrical conductor, any movement of it in the earth's magnetic field will induce small electric currents. These will have their own tiny magnetic fields which will induce noise signals in the search coil. With turbulence you have lots of little spinning dynamos close to the coil.
