For me, a lot depends on where/what I am hunting. A wide open field with few targets I swing at a moderate to fast pace. The A T has a fairly rapid target response so in that kind of environment you won't miss anything. In a heavy trash laden park setting, I slow my swing down as well as the width of my swing. All high tone tic's if old coin hunting are checked out and isolated, if possible. Slow, is the way I go in heavy trash. HH jim tn
Yep...what Jim said seems to work very well on the Pro...swing speed appropriate as conditions dictate. You can practice out in the yard and see just how fast you can whip that coil over a Q....then toss a penny and a nickle right beside the Q and try it again, then, drop a few nails in there with them all, and see if you can pick out the individual targets...

In trashy areas, one trick that works good for me is to raise sensitivity and swing the coil at about 15 cm above ground. The good signals tend to reach the coil, while the ferrous signals drop considerately.
I made the earphone jack modification. Works great, without any added resistors. Those faint beeps while pinpointing (like with the ACE 250) sure are nice to hear.
I only went detecting once in the last 2 weeks, but I still managed to get a nice find. I'll post it later in the Today's Finds forum. I'm still having problems taking sharp pictures of coins...

When there are multiple signals (such as a place littered with iron junk) I slow right down to a crawl. I know it has a fast reset but that doesn't mean to whip through it either. Give the machine time to process the barrage of signals and let those mid to high tones jump out. Once you hear them, make small and smaller sweeps over the chirp and isolate the best you can. You will be surprised what jumps out. Check out videos by Bill Ladd on the AT Pro / Gold.

Let me tell you guys a story..went out hunting with a club member, we were about 10ft apart when he went down to dig a target. When he look up to look for me I was about 100 yards from him. That's my sweeping speed and that's how impressive the AT PRO is. I do very well with coins and jewelry. I get ask all the time you're fast..I hardly ever see you get down. That's my secret...

One of the main reasons I also got the Pro was because of its fast recovery! I also fly through an area in a hurry, and often get told I'm moving too fast, but it seems to work for me, and YOU as well, for you certainly do rack up an amazing amount of finds in a short time...

The thing will also work real slow though, like when picking through the trash as Fabio mentioned, raising the coil and wiggling it, hovering it, tapping it, almost as if the center of the coil becomes a 4" sniper of somesort..
A guy can get the tight ping centered just through manipulating the coil in an awful mess of trash...when it comes right down to it, this is a really versatile machine...

Yes, I agree with them, do not forget the length of the steps, I try to take short or very short steps. if the area is full of trash, my coil moves like a clothing iron removing wrinkles. I inspect the bad signals from all angles to try to discover the presence of other good goals, including garbage removal ...

Lots of good advice. I just wanted to add that the baseline sweep speed that Garrett recommends is about 3 sec. per swing. Of course, we adjust from there depending on whether it's clean, open ground or loaded with targets. If you're mainly shooting recent coin drops, you can put on some speed. If it's an old site that has produced some deep goodness, slowing down can help reveal reveal the more reluctant treasures.
Senda: that's funny, I use the ironing or vacuuming image in my mind, too. Helps me make sure that I'm overlapping and not getting in too much of a rush.

There doesnt seem to be a top speed that I can find...On a clean beach/field that is, where you can whip this thing like a sling blade...I often clean squashed bugs off the side of the control box, coil, and lower shaft!......I picked up a dime and a penny this am going full bore across an expanse of dry sand heading to the water, by the time I heard the ping, momentum had carried me 10 feet ahead of the target and I had to turn around!....so thats good, no top end sweep speed within reasonable human physical capabilities that I can find on clean open ground with few targets. And, a guy can slow it way down and work a target/trash heavy area isolating signals if required...all in all, the AtPro swing speed is infinitely adjustable and effective throughout the humans physical capability range...so theres no real set "swing speed" per se: whatever you are comfortable with and the situation merits..settle on a physically comfortable speed and know you have options to spare if needed....nice rig that meets all the right requirements in this regard.

It depends on the depth of the signals and the amount of trash. Go slow will get you the deeper, better targets. Going quick will only get you the shallow obvious good sounding targets. However, it's always best to go over a questionable target in multiple directions to get a better idea of what it might be. If in doubt, dig it. It costs you nothing.
