Swing Speed

New member
I've heard the expression .. Swing it low Swing it slow.

what is the 'rule of thumb' for swing speed?

Is it 1 ' per second?

It depends on your detector, a 4 filter machine has to be swung quicker, a 2 filter is swung slower so you can take your time with that one.
Some people's hunting styles dictate what detector they should run. My style is like a ol'timer with Parkinson's disease, walking , a 2 filter design suits me just fine.
Other guys run around like they are angrily weedwacking their lawn under the wife's orders and are trying to finish it before the hockey game comes on. These are the 4 filter guys. To each to his own.
The sweep speed you mention is about right for most, just remember to overlap your swings and keep your coil parallel to the ground always.

For Garrett detectors, the ACE Series can be swung quite quickly. The GTI & GTP have to be swung a little slower, as there is a lot more information going into the processor. It's good to play with a questionable target. Swing the coil fast & slow over a target in all 4 directions, and that can give you some good information to decide if it is junk or not. Swinging too quickly, will allow you to miss some targets, especially if they are close to another target.

Depends on the detector and what features it is equipped with but one will always do better swinging slow. Too many folks get in a big hurry and go about it as if they are killing snakes and skip over half the targets. With a 250 you can swing fairly fast as it has rapid response and recovery but on the GTI, GTP one needs to slow down as they have too much info to process and their response and recovery ain't too swift. I always swing slow regardless of what I'm using as it pays off in the long run. On some tectors you can swing too fast and skip right over targets without the hint of a beep. Swing slower and run your sensitivity at about 50% - 60% and you'll be surprised what you can turn up.

thanks for your comments re: Swing Speed I appreciate it.
I don't understand why "...run the sensitivity at about 50% - 60%...." ?
If you run it a 100%.....wouldn't you find more?

thanks for any advice ( newbie...just got the equip. )

Maybe if you could hear the signal above all the chatter and racket. When you crank the sensitivity up it does not drive the signal deeper into the ground as many seem to believe and cling to - it just makes the coil more sensitive to everything in the ground including every piece of junk that was ever dropped and any mineralization present.

Bill, I have found out that going above a sweep speed that is uncomfortable causes the overlap to widen and the scan pattern to resemble a "Z" more that a straight line or arc. It was just this year that I realized the nice wide shape of the coil was fooling me into believing I was really overlapping, also.

I do know that once i read the comments here to
SLOW DOWN with the GTI I did much better
on my finds as far as quality and a LOT lees junk then
before

Whenever I find an object, I vary the sweep speeds to get an idea of whether the object is junk. The ID and the sounds will go beserk or quieten this way.
