I just made the big switch fro a Garrett machine to the new Safari. I can tell you it is quite a difference. Having a tough time getting use to the difference in tones, but other wise no complaints. Found a clad dime at almost 10" beneath a rusty nail and that impressed me! Heard the twitter of the dime signal but with a break in the tone, and the numerical scale read 48 and then dropped to 34 every time I crossed over it. Depth was shown as shallow. I dig about 4" and uncovered the nail, then hit the hole again and picked up the dime clear as a bell. Went on down as far as my trowel would go and out popped the dime. I really miss the nice lady telling me the approximate size of the target but I'll get use to it in time. onus
 
Ill switched from garrett to safari 2 weeks ago and i dont miss Garrett at all. Completle different world and old search fields are productive again.
 
The sleet and snow melted enough for me to get out in the yard and hit some practice targets. I laid out some clad coins, quarter, dime, nickel and zinc cent as well as a lead bullet and a brass cartridge case. Set the trash density on low and the sens on auto and coin mode. The battery signal showed two bars on the icon. The recovery time was terrible! When I would hit the quarter it would read 38 with a high tone and when I would move from the quarter to the nickel it would take several passes for it to give me the lower tone for the nickel and the numerical readout would stay at 38! If I hit the pinpoint button on and off, it would settle back with the low nickel tone and show 14 on the numerical scale, but the bottom scale would still show silver. Same thing when starting on the nickel and moving over to the quarter only in reverse! Something ain't right! Tried it on the lead bullet and got the same results. If I passed the coil over the secondary target several times it would eventually show the correct figures. But it was slooooooooow! The darn zinc Penny kept showing the same as a quarter! Any suggestions? Is it possible the batteries were so low in power they were causing the problem? I am using Rayovac alkalies and they have about six hours on them. I have Andy's Quattro book and I'm pretty sure I am doing everything on setting up the detector as it should be. Onus
 
Try "High Density" setting. I got the Safari a couple of weeks ago and I have alot to learn myself, this being my first FBS machine.
 
The manual and the videos over at mlotv.com say that you get better recovery speed when set at high density. The only thing I knew about the FBS machines when I bought the Safari was that they are slower. But nothing compares to the depth, especially in mineralized ground.
 
Turn off that darn auto sensitivity. Set the manual sensitivity to where it starts to chatter then back off until the sound is smooth.
 
I went out today to an old old park that should have had a ton of loose coins and other interesting things. I hunted for two hours with the Safari, found nothing and dug 4 dry holes. I tried low density, high density, auto sensitivity, cut back the sensitivity, tried coin mode, coin/jewelry mode, relic mode, etc., etc., etc! Did all the things the manual suggested. Found nothing, nada, zip! Becoming disgusted I went back to the car and got out my old reliable cheapie backup Tesoro and found 8 coins in ten minutes in the same areas I had been over. The problem I was having was I was getting too darn many signals with the Safari. I got a different tone every two inches and what it all amounted to was a lot of noise with numbers covering each other up before I could get a fix on a pinpoint. It's like this machine is speaking a foreign language. Is "Aussie" a foreign language? Anyway, I am getting pretty mortified and humbled by this machine. I'm no novice, but I am beginning to feel like one! Onus
 
onus,I posted more or less the same as you the other week...so many signals,impossible to dig them all,area of ground covered reduced by all signals.Frustrating....but you know,I am learning that if the machine says something is there ...indeed it is.I am no expert(some on here are,thankfully,because the advise is apreciated).I tend to use coin jewlery mode most and I am picking up some incredible signals.What amazes me is if it says coin it usualy is.The depth is amazing.As minelab do say,you will pick up others have not found.I am starting to turn that frustration into trust in the machine.The other day,in known saxon,roman area I dug quite deep through natural compact chalk 18inches at least,getting frustrated but still getting signals...I tend to dig most usualy..anyway among other things(of no intrest but facinated me how these items come to be in land so undisturbed)out of the chalk came what I can only describe as very old black iron something that looks like a clutch plate off a car...I am wondering if its actualy from a roman chariot or something,buried the way it was.depth a good 18inches.
I have no doubt onus the safari is an excelent detector...the problem I find,is getting to know the machine.

The QUATTRO, I would Read It ALEAST TWICE, before I even touch that detector. But, that is My Way of doing things! Good LUCK, Les Robinson

I completely agree with that.

I own a "Q", and have learnt very quick to adjust the sens in function of the places and times of the year I hunt.

On the wet sand beach, I use AUTO or 18 when possible, the whole year through !

But, if hunting crowded beaches IN THE SUMMER, I use a setting between 4 and 6 . Why should I crank it up to find 12" targets, risking to make the detector "null" on deep iron, when those recent losses are not deeper than 1-2"?

Believe me, even in a park, just turn the darn sens DOWN

This is the only reason why your backup unit found 8 coins at the place you hunted with the "S" : less power.

99% of newcomer do not understand the benefits of LOWERING the sens. All they want is "depth". Big mistake !

FBS technomogy will indeed find coins and object missed by other detectors. It's a fact, it is due to the amount of frequencies. But like a sportscar or a DSLR camera, you have to "drive" or use them wisely.

I think I am hearing deeper targets hiding beneath the shallow ones. I have not heard that before with any of my other machines that usually don't go deeper than about 8". I hear so many beeps it is overwhelming me. So my next outing I will turn the sens way down and see what happens.Onus

Be sure to reduce the speed of your sweep also. It will seem "unnatural" at first, but slowing the speed of the sweep down made a huge difference when I started using my Quattro.
I agree with Nick also, get the sensitivity down to 12 to 15 to start with, you will be amazed at how much less organ music you hear!

Haven't had decent hunting weather but have been tosing out various coins, objects and junque in the yard to work on identifying the sounds. I actually think I do better with the high setting than the low. Just need to get out more. I am finding the heck out of scrw off pop lids! :rolleyes: Onus
 
I have both a 2500, 1500, Garrettt and thinking about trying out the safari. I like the depth that the machine seems to find coins at. I don"t believe I every found a coin over 6" deep with the Garrett. Relics and large iron yes. If you could ,the next several times you find a good deep target with the minelab before you dig it run the Garrett over it . I would be very interested in the results. If the Garrett doesn"t see it I will be looking for new a machine. Don't get me wrong I think Garrett is great Machine. I spend a lot of time metal detecting and don't what to miss a coin 8 to 10inches +down. If it is lack of experience and technique , so be it. Keep us posted
 
Ooops! I sold my 2500. But I hunt 3 or 4 club hunts every year where they have a "deep" hunt. They plant silver quarters and dimes at 9" and the person who recovers the most, dimes so many points, quarters so many points wins the big prize. With my 2500 I have never found a coin, not even in all metal! The winner is usually one guy who is a Minelab dealer! A Whites DFX has won it a couple of times but the Minelab is consistently first or second. That's one of the reasons I bought the Safari, club hunts. Onus
 
That response did not make my day. I found allot of good stuff but now I thinking how much did I miss. I guess I can go back to all those sites again. That means one thing ,the old stuff is still there,maybe. Do I want to spend another $998.00 ,that's the Question. I know that no machine can find everything especially if the targets are not there. What to do! HELP!
