T2 classic pin pointing question

Hey folks... my father got a T2 recently ....... fine machine!.... I was testing it in his yard and the pin point depth seems off. Off as in 2/3 inches.
Clad dime a 3 inches read 5 inches..... 4 inch penny read 6. Now I’ve never used one before ,but is there a setting that must be adjusted?
 
You can try adjusting the pinpoint sensitivity. The procedure for doing that is on page 18 of the T2 manual.
