T2 pinpointing issue

Has anyone else had any issues with the depth reading when pinpointing with the T2. I dug quite a few wheats last night at 4-5" and the T2 kept telling me 8-9". I took my time and made sure I was pinpointing them correctly. I usually subtract about 2 inches from what the machine is telling me, but 4-5" off in depth seemed like a lot. This pinpointing depth feature was one reason I bought the T2. I hunt a lot of parks, where the old stuff is deep so I usually don't bother digging the shallow targets. Any suggestions?

Were the coins on an angle, or on edge in the ground. I have noticed the T2 finds a lot of on edge coins and that does throw the depth reading off.

I have noticed that at times different soil conditions seems to have a slight affect on the depth reading. Usually I always use a hand held pinpointer to scan my plug before I dig any further, just to be sure the target is not closer than I first thought. I have to say I love the T2's pinpointing, IMO it is easy and accurate, the only question I sometimes have with it is this. If I have a few targets that are close together, and the T2 is hitting what seems to be multiple tones and targets close together. I don't really know what target it is locking on to when pulling the trigger to pinpoint.

Elton, that is what I was thinking at first, but I bet a dug 8 wheaties that were reading like this. I did ground balance first. I was trying to hunt "hot" so I had the sens at 91 and the disc at 51 hoping the "boostification" would kick in. I could pinpoint where the coin was okay, but it was usually in my plug vs. the hole were I would expect it to be at that depth.

As Elton mentioned, I as well have found coins on edge or slanted to give deeper readings then actual. Also, tall grass can be a factor as well. On my T 2, on a actual 6" deep target, the depth meter reads deeper by about 2," and that is with the coil right on top of short grass. If the grass is taller, it will be off by more. HH jim tn

I've found that the T2 's depth reading is set for a quarter sized target so a smaller target like a penny would read deeper than it actually is. But 4-5 inches is way off. The only issues about depth I've run across, other than coins on edge, are extremely dry soils. It seems the depth gets pretty erratic even though the pinpoint is right on. Anyway, congrats on the wheaties the are getting harder and harder to find.

Like some of the other posters here I have found that coins/targets smaller than a quarter size have been shallower than the pointpointing said they were. I often hunt for Civil War relics and dropped bullets are consistently 2-4 inches shallower than the reading indicates. I have also found the ground conditions affect the readings, also as some of the others have noted. I use a quality pinpointer, over the years I have found too many benefits to using one so that now I usually use the T2 pinpointer function to center the target and get a general idea whether it is shallow or deep. I then check each clump of dirt I extract from the hole for the target with the handheld pinpointer.

Lay some coins on a piece of cardboard clear underneath..Check your depth reading and see how close it is.. I just checked mine that way and it reads for the most part dead on if not buried.. 2 4 6 8 inches..Have you for sure got the coil centered on the pinpoint for proper depth ???

Elton, and others I definitely had the coil centered and was consistently digging pennies at the previously mentioned depths. I would even try it from a different angle to see if it would pinpoint it shallower. It was a solid 81 at 8-9" everytime. After a while I figured it out that they were shallower. I usually take into account the grass length as others previously mentioned, perhaps it was the soil conditions as it had just rained. I really need to get a pinpointer as it will make this process easier. BTW, can anyone tell me what # readings they get for IH pennies? I heard they might read a little lower 79-80, but I haven't found one with the T2 yet, but I know there are some in the park I'm hunting.

Wow, thanks Jim. If they are reading that low I definitely haven't been digging them. I'm in a modern park so I pretty much don't dig anything less than 78 except a pretty solid 57-58 for a nickel. I'll have to keep that in mind. Anyone else?

You want to make sure the coil is not near to the coin or any other metal objects when pulling the switch for all metal mode.If it is you are detuning the machine and coins will read deeper.

I found a shallow 1902 IH (less than 2 inches) that read a 77-78. Normal soil conditions and ground balance of 58-62.

I think this may be the issue as I was hunting in a trashy park and was trying to detune to really pinpoint the target amongst the trash. It can be hard to do with the large coil.

I swing the coil a foot or so off the ground then I depress the trigger. At times I have pressed the trigger too close to the ground and would get no pinpoint at all. I probably had it directly over another target.
