Often after work on Wednesdays I will detect a coworkers yard, who only lives 5 minutes away from the shop. The "downtown" yard is pretty small and very trashy after being in his family since the early 1900's. Lots of foil, bottle caps, pull tabs and random junk. I have hunted the place a dozen times with the Whites MXT and the T2 and have dug many cool coins and other trinkets.. This week I decided to try setting the T2 up as 90-77-2+ ( stock coil ) and see how it would perform. I was nervous with such high discrimination, but committed to the "cherry-picking" experiment. I was quite surprised at what I found.

I did dig a couple of rusty nails and one rusty bottle cap, but other than that it was consistently good targets. In my test garden it seemed to hit "clearly" at about 5 inches on a silver dime. Not a great choice of settings for deep coins, but maybe worth trying sometimes as sort of a "curve ball".
 
Wasn't really expecting Indians. I basically just picked a number I thought would limit bottle caps, with copper and silver coins in mind.. What are the Indians ringing up as on the T2? I generally run 60-39-bp,, but was just experimenting on a well hunted yard this time.
 
Not sure on the Indian Heads, most of mine were found with the cz-5 and the sovereign. They should be about the same as a zinc penny. Next question, why 39 instead of 40? 40 eliminates all iron but I wouldn't there would be much left at 39. Thanks
 
I ran the 90-77-2+ again yesterday in a well worked and trashy park. This particular patch of grass has been well worked by Minelab's on a regular basis. I did pick up a merc, clad and several copper memorials up to about 5 inches. There was one particular gold colored screw cap that kept fooling me though,, I dug 6 of those. Again,,, just doing some experimenting in high trash areas.

I use 39 discrim. on the stock coil and 50 on the 5 inch coil on recommendation from a member here,, "woodchiphustler". All I can say for sure is that with those settings the machine is quite stable, and I've done pretty well with it at home sites and wood lots in the 6 months I've owned the T2.
 
So Chuck, I appreciate you questioning my settings. It forced me to do some research on the IHP situation. This afternoon I buried a 1890's IHP at 5 inches and it rang in at 78-81 consistently. If I swapped to Boost Process, it stayed above 80 and gave me another inch of depth. I may look at dropping the discrim to 75 and see what happens in real world detecting. I'm losing depth for sure, but wasting a lot less time on digging "iffy" signals that turn out to be trash. And I've picked up a couple more silvers in the process.

Again,,, just playing around with some "cherry-picking" settings.
 
Why do you think your losing depth with the higher disc. If you are you can increase the sensitivity. I hunt a lot of clad and I usually set the disc at 80 and tone at one. Don't know what 2+ gives in tones. If I'm hunting nickles I will use 3 to be able to find the clad and nickles without worrying about the zinc pennies.
 
A few weeks ago I did almost the same as you on a relic hunting trip. There's a small spring that I hunt around at a civil war site. The bank of this spring is a carpet of small iron and modern trash. Tab tops, foil, etc. At the end of the day walking back to the truck I past by this spring again. Being too tired to dig another hole I thought I'd set the t2 se at 85 disc., 99 sens. Bp mode almost hoping I wouldn't get a signal. But just a few feet in I got a nice signal. About 5" down I pulled out this nice 1916 dime amongst all that trash. I'm convinced had I not been cherry picken' using 80 disc. I'd have walked right over this target like I'd done many times before. The t2 se/dst, other than water hunting, is like several detectors in one.:cheers:

I think I'm gonna try it at the co-workers yard again tomorrow,,, but this time with the 5 inch coil.
 
Didn't work too well with the 5 inch coil. It was really liking the rusty old nails. I think maybe dialing back the sensitivity would have helped some. I did manage to scrape up one more wheat and another piece of play money out of his yard though.
 
When looking for silver, i use 78 30 bp i have been very success full however the soil in your area may be different, I'm in BOSTON
