T2 setup for beginners...

MIG73

New member
Hello All. I have a T2 on the way. Can you tell me what the best setup procedure/settings are for a beginner. I live in SC and my ground is typically pretty neutral. Many of (but not all) the areas I hunt have a good bit of iron in them, and I mainly relic hunt. Any tips on this type of hunting both in and out of iron would be appreciated.

MIG73, if you are a serious relic hunter you are in for a treat. I've been relic hunting for about a year with the T2 in the southern NC and northern SC area. The best settings for relic hunting in my opinion is disc. 10, sens. 80 to 90, and mode +2. The 10 disc lets you hear pretty much everything. The higher the sens. it seems like the louder the signal. Mode +2 will let you hear 2 tones the low tone is iron and the higher tone is everything above iron. If you know you are in a civil war area you may want to dig some iron. I've found some nice relics by digging iron. One was a nice base cup to a Hotchkiss shell, so you may not want to leave some of the iron in the ground. Once you get used to the T2 you will understand what I'm talking about. You will need a good digging tool. I use a garden spade that has a long narrow blade. If you have any questions give me an e-mail. Good luck and happy hunting. I've posted some pictures on some nice iron items that alot of people would have over looked.

These are like additional modes that the T2 does not have.....like 1 for plowed fields, one for jewlery, etc.....& a default.
So with the T2 you will just have disc mode & all metal to work with.
Like Dick said you are in for a real treat once learned!
Try the all metal mode with target ID for deep relics....I love it.

Hi Mig

I don't have a lot of time on the T2 but so far my preferences run to the 1 and 2+ modes. They both work well in heavy iron but I am starting to go more with mode 1 over 2+. I think a lot is personal preference. Since I have a lot of hours on the 1236/1270 Fishers, mode 1 seems to fit me better. 2+ is certainly nice to use but I seem to get a better feel for things from the audio info in mode 1 especially in areas with lots of iron.

PS: the T2 is a dream to use in iron trashy areas compared to the 1270! No comparison!

The T2 has I think 5 or 6 different modes, but I only use +2 and some times dp which will give you a tone for each ID number. The +2 modes gives you 2 tones, one for iron a low rough tone and everything above that will be a nice even tone then you can look and the ID screen and see what range the tone falls in. When you get the T2 it will not take you very long the figure which mode you like. After the first day or two you will be ready to rock and roll. The T2 is probably one of the easiest machines to master in just a few days. The more you use it the more you learn. When I got mine I didn't have time to really get out and try it out except in the yard and after a week or two I had a chance to get down to northern SC for some relic hunting with a couple of friends, and after about half and hour I new this was going to be one hell of a machine, and I have slowed down yet. The Minelab and Tesoro haven't seen the light of day yet. When you get yours read the manual, read the manual, read the manual. Good luck.

Like I do....Try Nasa Tom's "monotone" iron set-up......
disc 21
sensitivity 80+
1 tone & rely heavily on the audio amid the chatter.
Absolutely deadly in thick iron.....

HI Bill,

Yeah, I agree that 21 disc setting is pretty good in iron. Today I hit a spot (hammered with the Edge & X-70 last spring and fall) and the T2 pulled a lot of brass and lead out today. This is a cornfield with the cut off stalks bent over from the snow and uneven ground to boot. GB @ 79, Fe .03 One thing about tone 1 is with a "normal" sweep speed the tones are a bit more abrupt but once you get used to it (or slow down) its fine. 2+ with the iron tones is a good mode as well, I like them both.

I know Cali Paul does, & others. Horsesoldier is having success using 20 disc & 3 tones, so I guess it's whatever your ears like best....
That large sized coil is so decieving...I've never seen a coil that big do so well in trash, you really have to try it to believe it, & I seem to improve my technique with each dig...
HH,
Bill

and its true, that coil does very well seperating in trash/iron. Just puttering around my yard I have picked up 2 IH's, a sleigh bell, a rabbit charm and lots of "relics" LOL. What I find amazing its ability to pick out the smallest of brass items in iron. I'm finding things like thin brass washers smaller than my little finger nail in the iron with good hits.
