T2 weirdness today...

I was detecting in a old yard and pennies were reading like dimes. Even pennies that I threw on the ground. They all would read 81-84 and also they would read 5-6" deep even the ones laying on the mulch right under the tops of the mowed grass about 1" from the coil... 81-84 and 5-6" deep...

A dime tossed on the ground read 84-85 and correctly measured the 1" from the coil that it was....

What give's with the pennies?? The iron reading was 1.0 and GC was 57... I tried different sensitivities and had the disc set at 40.

Thanks,

Julien

Hi jbow,

Are you sure your ground was reading a 1.0 ? That is really high. It is quite possible you were on top of iron and had it disc out so you didn't know it. The only indication would have been a very high FE304 graph reading. That would influence your readout on the ol pennies there. And I'm assuming you were throwing down zincs and not coppers.

I'd hazard a guess you had more than you thought under your coil.

No, that was the problem. I was throwing out coppers. I wasn't thinking, as usual. The iron is really high here in some places though. Really high and a 1.0 isn't that unusual on a hill here. I'm in Bartow county GA.

Thanks for the help...

I'm still not sure about this T2 though. Today I found my first round musket ball, I usually find minnies. The only problem is that the T2 ran right over it just chattering and the TID jumping all over. I reswept with the Soverign GT and found it right away because of the steady TID on the GT. I can never seem to get a steady TID out of the T2 and in trash it's necessary unless I want to dig it all. Anyway, i'll either get the hang of it or sell it after GNRS. It really does feel good though. I ordered a pocket Uniprobe today to use with it.

I am concerned about how it is going to work in a hunt with 200 other detectors running on a property. The other day I was comparing it with the GT and a Tejon. I had found good sounding targets with the GT then going over them with the T2 and then the Tejon to compare how each machine read the target. I had the T2 on and leaning against my tailgate about 30-40 ft away while I was checking the hits with the Tejon and I could hear it over there chattering away when I was swinging the Tejon...
Have you ever had problems running your T2 around other machines or is it not an issue? I've been wondering if you could open up the control box and put shielding in it, like they do on some electric guitars to stop interference. They make sheilding material that is thin like foil and you just line the cavity in a guitar. I wonder if that would help the T2. I can't imagine that the coil, which was flat on the ground was picking up the Tejon from that distance and I wonder if the box itself picks up interference...

Well, thanks and btw, when I tried a zinc penny, I no longer had a problem, DOH!

Julian,

That is the problem I think you are going to see with the T-2 when other detectors are being used. I tried mine at a competition hunt and it chattered no mater with detector was close to it. I also found when i compared signals with my friend with the Explorer and he didn't shut his detector off I couldn't get some signals he could until he turn his off. This could have something to do with how sensitive the T-2 is.

Did you try changing the frequency on the T2 to get rid of the chatter near other units ???

If your hunting with someone that is using a Explorer, have him do a noise cancel while you both have your units on, near each other, then change the frequency on your T-2.

Personally, the T2 wouldn't be my first choice in a competition hunt because of how unstable it can be with other machines around. I started doing better with my T2 when I started turning the T2's sensitivity down. It surprises me your Sov is deeper on lower conductors. I prefer my Explorer for silver and cooper but that T2 can sniff out some pretty small and deep targets.

Well... the round ball was not deep, in fact about 1/4 of it was sticking out of the ground. I think that the T2 is probably deeper on small stuff, it's just hard to control sometimes. However, today I went out and tried it in Dp with the Sens at 85 and the disc at 40 and it was surprisingly quiet. I found a Buffalo nickle and a small solid minnie one ringer...

Thanks!

Thanks, I need all the info I can get on this. I hunt alone more often than not but I am going to GNRS, which is the reason I bought the T2, I got on the BH team for a chance to go to the hunt...

I have been using it almost exclusively for about a month so hopefully I will be very comfortable with it by the end of October..

Julien

Like I said above, I hope to be comfortable enough with it be GNRS so that I can use it around other detectors, I may just have to try and seperate from the crowd as much as possible...

Thanks

and I will not find out until I get there or possibly a few days before. They really have to keep a lid on these planned hunts because of the "anti's" who will show up and try to disrupt things. You know, we should leave all relics in the ground to rot, unless the Archies decide they want to plunder...
Some people don't have enough to do!

you strongly consider and start practicing hunting in all metal. I think you'll be surprised how much better for relic hunting it is. Sure, you lose the tone ID, but with practice, you'll get and recognize all the sonic and numeric ID info you need and more in all metal.

The TID works in All Metal on the T2, at least it does on mine. I have not checked to see if it is accurate but I will..
