The first chart is just air tests. I've not had the HF or LF coil long enough to do an honest evaluation of targets in the ground, other than my test bed. And since none of those "test bed targets" are over 10-inches deep, all three coils hit them. If I raise the coil over those targets to get more "depth", it becomes a partial air test. The second chart shows ground phase readings "in the dirt", as well as target information for targets under 8" in depth. I am hoping that winter holds off long enough to do some actual field comparisons on deeper targets. If it does, I'll post my thoughts. HH Randy
 
Very interesting information on your chart air tests. Can't wait to see if the tests are similar on field testing as far as the depth differences. I realize the actual depth will be different but it seems like the 3 khz would be very good for everything except small gold.

digger I am in the market for a 705. And am going to get the 10.5" coil. Dose the 10.5 have differant HKz or is it one coil
with all 3 HKz? and dose the 10.5 DD get that much more Depth than the stock coil.

Don, the 10.5 inch coils come in either 7.5 kHz or 18.75 khz. None of the X-TERRA coils incorporate more than one frequency. Although a lot of folks report getting more depth with the 10.5 inch DD coil compared to the 9-inch concentrics, in the moderately mineralized places I hunt, I get just as much depth with the concentrics. Your sites may provide different results, depending on the mineralization. If your soil is highly mineralized, go with the DD coils. Even if the soil is moderately mineralized, you won't go wrong using a DD. Just more weight on the end of the rod. Depending on whether you get your 705 with the stock 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz, or the "gold pack" with the stock elliptical at 18.75 kHz might help determine which 10.5 inch accessory coil you want to add to your arsenal. If you have the MF 7.5 concentric, you may want to consider the HF 10.5 inch DD. On the other hand, if you get the HF elliptical "gold pack", you might want to get the MF 10.5 DD, just to have two different frequency coils in your stable. JMHO HH Randy
 
I received the 18.75 khz coil and was excited to try it out. I did some air test of my own and the results were a bit disappointing.
Here are the results from my air test.

Auto NC channel selected: -1
Sensitivity set at 28.

Zinc 1 cent: 10"
Indian head cent: 10"
2 Cent piece: 8"
V Nickel: 10"
Clad Nickel: 10"
Half Dime: 6"
Silver dime: 8"
Clad dime: 8"
Clad Quarter: 10.5"
Silver Half Dollar: 10.5"
.54 Caliber Minnie Ball: 10"
.58 Caliber Minnie Ball: 11"
Union Artillery button: 8"

It is hotter on gold compared to the stock coil but without having something that is a uniform standard I would hate to write anything that may mislead someone.
The shear size will allow the user to cover plenty of ground. It is a bit hefty but it's nothing unbearable. It is a well balanced coil. Not sure when I will be able to try it out in the field but test results from there will vary from other people's soil condition so it would be a moot point to write about such. Not sure why my air test varies from Diggers?

When you do an Auto NC, make sure the coil is horizontal to the ground, about knee high. And for the sake of experimentation, you might try manually selecting different NC channels to see if the results are different.

I don't know why your coil responded differently to the various targets other than to say, when I do coil comparison tests, it is usually with the target laying flat on the ground and not "suspended" in the air. Having a ground matrix under the coil and target can alter the detector's performance. I will also say, when testing various detectors, coils or detector/coil combinations, I've found it nearly impossible to get two of anything that perform in the exact same fashion. Coils can differ, due simply to variances in the manufacturing process.......Winding the coil, encasing coil windings, soldering coil cable to coil circuit board, tuning coil windings, fixing the coil to the housing, pouring epoxy resin over coil windings to hold them in place, applying the shielding material, sealing the coil housing with glue and/or epoxy (depending on type of coil),calibrating and programming of micro-controller. All of these steps leave room for performance variations, as you can imagine. It would of had to meet the technical specifications to have left the manufacturing facility. But that doesn't mean it would perform precisely the same as the one going out ahead of it, or behind it.
