Targets buried in roots!

What do you all do if your target is buried deep in some roots in a park or sensitive place? Do you go back to the vehicle and pull out the big guns like a chainsaw and cut your way through? Is your motto target at any cost or do you give up on the target?

But seriously I have dug a few wheats out from under some roots using patience (yeah right) and a big screwdriver with myLeche as well. You can do it neatly if you're carefull. If it's in a tangle of roots, well, it better be a silver signal or forget it!

Wow! I got into that situation yesterday...along side a nice park was a row of trees, and I was just stabbin the stink outta coins...the roots were awful, but I managed to finagle around them with the screwdriver...a few targets I could not get, and they were deep, I did find a wheatie, so I knew there was old silver there...I have a machete and a tiling spade up in the truck, and I thought about getting the heavy artillary out...but then, I can imagine the calls to the law about some guy with a machete out in the park...so discretion was observed in order to not malign my metal detecting brethren, and I left those targets there! I did get 9.57 in clad just along that strip...tomorrow, I'll do a tear out at a school, OLD DIRT! and a festival that just got finished FRESH DROPS! and all the tents and rides will be gone in the am...then maybe in the water a little GOLD!...

Get the serrated edged digger

When you are in roots to thick to cut with the Lesche digger there is an item that only costs about 3 dollars in the camping department of Wally World that does a dandy job on roots up to at least 2 to 3 inches in diameter. It is like a wire with teeth and a ring at each end to hold on to. All you need to do is dig around the root till you have enough space to slip one of the rings under the root so you can get hold of it and pull it through and hold onto the ring and with the other hand use a sawing movement and the root will cut like butter. What is amazing is the wire does not feel very sharp but works like a charm.

I carry a small pair of rose pruning shears. If the roots are pencile size or smaller, I snip them to clear the hole.
They are small enough that they are not easly seen when you are using them.

Pruning shears are a great idea. They fit in your back pocket and would work great!! HH
