A friend of mine showed me a whites 4db that he inherited from his father. He told me it isn't working and ask me to take a look. I inspected the battery compartment and found a batter holder the holds 8 AA Connected to the 2 wire (9 volt style) connector. The hold shows some corrosion and is broken. Couple questions.....is this the original equipment battery holder? If not , What was the original battery holder? Next question....can a 9 volt battery be substituted in place of current setup. All info is welcome....he would love to bring it back to life. He remembers his dad finding lots of silver with it back when.

The 8 AA battery holder is the correct one for the 4 db. I had two of the older Whites that wouldn't work given to me a few years ago and the battery holders and clips were the problem on both of them. Batteries had been left in them and they were corroded so badly they couldn't be cleaned up, but the local Radio Shack had the holders and battery clips and after putting them on the detectors fired up and worked fine.

AA batteries (cells) are 1.5 volts each. 8 of them would = 12 volts. So in answer to your question concerning substituting a 9 volt battery in place of the 8 AA cells, a single 9 volt battery wouldn't provide sufficient voltage. Stick with the "original" style 8 cell pack for the AA's. HH Randy

It won't hurt to try a 9v. battery. Many detectors that use the 8 AA cell battery pack ( 12v. ), have a regulator chip on the circuit board that holds the voltage to the circuit down to 8.7v. to 9v. anyway. And, if it does need the full 12v., the 9v. battery will look like a discharged 12v. pack, the worst that will happen is that the detector won't work very well or you'll get a 'low battery' indication. I'm betting that it will work just fine, but battery life will be short.

answer: 8 "aa" holder was original power source!
NOT 9 volt!
