Tejon questions?

bulletman

Well-known member
I currently own the Cibola and the Conquistador. Have been reading a lot about the Tejon, about how deep this machine goes. One quote is "It will make your old sites like new ones". Just wondering if this is true? Seems like the Vacquero and the Tejon are the same machines. The V just doesn't have the alternate disc? I would appreciate an honest appraisal about this. Don't want to spend about $550.00 for a detector that has no advantage over other models. Thanks!

Bulletman,
I have a Cibola, Tejon and CZ6a for land and a CZ20 and Sand Shark for water. When I first got the Cibola, I took it to the beach. Now I only take the CZ's and Sand Shark to the beaches.

The Vaquero is more like the Cibola with the addition of ground balance and a switch to lock on all metal than it is like the Tejon.

I picked up the Tejon used. I almost gave up on it because I thought it didn't give me a large advantage over the CIbola and CZ6a combination. The Tejon with the standard coil was a little tough to use in real trashy areas while the Cibola was much quieter and easy to use.

What has really changed my mind about the Tejon was one particular real trashy area after I picked up the 5.75 inch concentric coil. I had fairly recently worked over this one area with a 5 inch coil on the CZ6a and with the Cibola with standard coil. I thought it was fairly clean except for iron but the Tejon with the standard coil still just lit up with so much noise it was pretty difficult to work. With the smaller coil, I could start picking things out. Most of what I am digging from this area is deeper than what I pulled out with the Cibola and CZ6a. I am not sure what all the factors are, since I have dug deeper targets with both the Cibola and CZ6a in other areas. I am thinking there is some masking involved.

I have also noticed that the Tejon hits very hard on brass and lead ... and that should also mean gold if I can actually put the coil over some.

In this trashy area, once I got the smaller coil, the Tejon brought newness to this site. A link to yesterday's hunt in this trashy area with the Tejon is:
Tejon hunt

I need more open field time with the Tejon to compare to the CZ6a with a large coil.

As for the Cibola ... I love it because I can grab it, go and start hunting without paying much attention to it, it is so light and does it's job!

The 5.75 is a favorite for trashy sites. The Tejon is just a chatter critter by nature - it's language one has to get used to. The chatter language speaks allot.

TVR - thanks for the response. I have owned many detectors over the years - including the CZ-6a. A great detector - probably shouldn't have sold that one. I have just started going back to more basic detectors - without Target I.D.. Tesoro is by far my favorite (my current high end is the DFX). I appreciate the tone and the language of the Tesoro over other brands. I hunt mostly in open fields that have been plowed over the years. I believe that there are many great finds to be found in the 12 inch range and beyond in some of these fields (due to being plowed deeply). Most of these fields are not very trashy - just some iron junk here and there. Just hoping that the Tejon would be the magic bullet that I am after for these deeper targets?

Hay TVR,

You said something that a lot of people don't understand very well.

There is depth and then there is depth.........

People don't seem to understand that depth can be reduced to just
a few inches or less by trash and ground conditions.

That's why a machine like the Compadre can get more depth than
a lot of high end machines.

The Cibola and Vaquero can work well with a small coil and the
Eldorado does very well under these cituations.

But when the conditions get too bad, I guess I need to look at the
four filter machines for that.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

Masking can greatly hamper the Tejon's ability (in my area) to reach deep targets. I've dug many medium to low volume beeps that turned out to be coins at less than 4" deep. I'm not sure all the causes of deep sounding (faint signals) and shallow coins in my area. Ever learning:clap:

It kind of surprised me that the higher frequency Tejon was pulling deeper stuff out of this particular area.

As to a more open field with the standard coil. I have pulled two quarters from a practice outfield with the Tejon at the full length on my digger with it's specified length over all of 11.75 inches. Ground condition in outfield area I'd consider fairly mild. It appears to have a lot of top soil since all I pulled out when I dug those quarters was pretty good looking dirt, not yellow gray hard dirt or sand / clay mix like I see in a lot of this general area. These two deep ones were several yards apart during the same hunt. They were strong definite hits, not faint, and I was criss-crossing the out field at a walking pace, not slowly or methodically gridding. I only have maybe a half dozen hours in open areas with the Tejon. I now have about two dozen hours with the Tejon in the trash, about half of that time is with the 5.75 concentric, and I am certainly still learning. It is also nearing time to change out the batteries.

It does kind of point to the concept that several of the more experienced on here have said; when you think you have really worked an area, change coils, work it with a different detector, change hunting methods and you will find more.
