Teknetiks T 2 or MINELAB EXPLORER ....which one is...

the top Dog ? I know, I know...I don't want to be starting a "Range war"... but I've heard alot about these T 2's and a friend of mine is ranting and raving about them also. He plans on purchasing one only to try to show up my EXPLORER. I won't mention what brand of detector he has now cause that would only start more mud slinging. But what I will say is my Explorer blow's it away! Poor guy, I told him you can't always believe everything you see on TV ! oops!
would appreciate feedback from distingushed collegues who have used both detectors.:minelab:

is going to blow his T2 away. I own an explorer but I also have a T2 on the way. I plan on doing my own testing. That may take a while. I work slow. I really think the explorer is the best coin detector ever.

I have a T2 on the way and own an Explorer. Which one is better depends on how you define better. Each machine has it strengths and weaknesses even beyond depth issues. I own a couple of machines and like them all as they have strengths that make me keep them. As far as depth on the Explorer vs. T2 that remains to be seen for me. For the record, in milder areas that I hunt my CZ-3D (8 inch coil) is deeper than my Explorer (stock coil). In more nasty ground my Explorer just kicks my 3D's butt in depth. I detect every weekend the weather permits. I've used the Explorer for 5 years and am quite familiar with it. So, basically which is better depends on A) what you're looking for in a machine B) your mineralization ... that's probably over simplifing it but the general idea is there. I'd be interested in where you live and what type of sites you hunt. The T2 is largely unproven but has been getting some great reviews from experienced people.

Hi Bill W.
I live in Chicago, IL. I hunt in all sorts of conditions from the woods and prairies to back yards, parkways, vacant lots, parks, construction sites, to the shores and parks of lake Michigan. The competition is fierce. but there is so much going on that opportunities are constantly arising. The only problem I have is what alot of us have is lack of "TIME". as far as "A" goes, I'm looking for the best all around machine. (as we all are). I understand where your coming from with respect to "each machine has it's strengths and weaknesses" as I also own about 7 detectors. But in this day of modern detectors, there soon WILL BE a BEST all around detector!
Imagine, 20, 30 years ago....who would have thought we would have the detector capabilities we have today? My money is on Minelab for VDI machines. And Tesoro for solid tone I.D. detectors. Although.. Minelabs Excalibur and sovereigns are no pushovers in that category either.
Happy Hunting !

That is a question we all would like to know. I just got a T-2 last Friday, but ground is froze yet up here in ND and I also have a Explorer XS II and the X-Terra 30 and the 50.
I feel to learn the T-2 will be better than the Explorer as it is easier to understand. The weight of the T-2 is great and a lot lighter then the Explorer. I like the option you can set the T-2 to a single tone, 2 tones, 3 tones and even a 4 tone detector. Settings on the T-2 are easy to do. Now as far as performance I will have to see what it can do in actual hunts, but deep down feel the T-2 will get beat out by the Explorer for coin hunting, but like I say we will have to see what will happen when we can do a side by side comparison.
On air test I feel from what I have seen the Explorer will be better at IDing coin targets over the T-2. Also for depth the Explorer on air test along with the X-Terra seem to be a little more than the T-2,but this is air test like I say and will know more when I can get out and do some comparisons on actual targets.

I am like you for the lack of time. I think we're all looking for that BEST all around detector. For the moment, I am using several different machines to do the job. I'd love to just take one machine out on hunts and a couple of different coils. There's no doubt about it that everything Minelab puts out are strong machines. I bought my 3D about 2 years ago and was pleased at how well it compliments my hunting sites with the Explorer. I am hoping my T2 will fill the middle ground in what I 'think' I need... :) There's a ton of metal detectorist in my area and the competition is fierce too. I am always looking for a machine a little bit 'different' to find those coins every other run of the mill detector passed over. Good luck on the next machine! HH!

Each one has it's strengths and places where they can't be beat. I have been going over an area with one and then testing the other. So far, they are about even. At first I thought the T-2 falsed more than the EX II on deep iron until I ran the EX II over the same spot. The EX II will false with a high tone just like the T-2. They both fit my hunting style very nicely. I love the lightweight T-2 for swinging, but I have alot of confidence in the EX II because it has proven itself over the last 2-3 years for sniffing out the deep coins amongst the trash. I think the T-2 will also do the same with a more time on it. I don't think you will go wronf with either machine, but, you have to learn the machine whichever you decide on.

For small silver coins i prefer the explorer 2 - small silver sounds sweet. The dfx is fast (great for modern coin shooting) but not as good as the ex 2 on trash sites.

Well I'm having to seriously reconsider the statement I made right above this. I'm still testing. Depth seems close. The lighter and faster of the two may win my heart.

I have had the priveleage of talking to a bunch of people that have used both over the past month. I have read so many posts in relation to the T2 and EXII. All I can say is the T2 is looking to be good competition for the EXII. Unfortunately I haven't had any hands on with the T2 to compare myself to the EXII but from what I am gathering it seems to get the same if not extremely close to the EXII's depth with faster response. Looking at the designers of the T2 I don't see how you could go wrong with it.

I don't think the T2 is better than the EXII but so far I don't think the EXII is better than the T2 either. Pro's and cons to both. Personally I might get one. The price is right on the T2.
